Autism Is A Journey- A Poem

I have written a poem about how I believe that autism is a journey. There are the struggles but there are also the positives.

For me, I believe autism is a journey
Like every journey, it has curves, bumps and potholes
But it also has the path that you are looking for.
With autism, it can feel like there are many bumps in the road
People claim that they understand your journey
But I don't think they actually do.
I don't want your judgement.
I don't want to be told to speak louder.
I don't want to be told to look at you whilst you are talking to me.
I might not look at you whilst you talk to me.
Although this is frustrating, I have no control
I still listen but in different ways.
I am not rude
I am not anti-social
I am not a pest
I am shy and I am hidden away.
But this is me!
If you think of me as a problem
That is your choice.
Autism is not just struggling to look at people in the eye or to make friends
It is a whole spectrum of struggles.
Some you might expect and some you might not.
That is why it is Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Some people struggle to communicate
Others don't.
Some people struggle with noise
Others don't.
We might seem weird or annoying
But actually we are just trying to accept ourselves for who we are.
If you truly feel you understand my journey,
Follow it with me!
If you want to help me then don't judge me! Because this is me and this is my journey!

Finally, I would like to share some information about some famous people who I discovered also have/had autism. Some of these you might know and some you might not know.

This is a really amazing and wonderfully written poem Dancer. I’m sure it’ll offer comfort to others who can relate.

And thank you for sharing that list with us, there’s quite a few people on this list I never knew had autism. It goes to show how no one person with autism is the same.

Thank you again for sharing this post with us.
Sending lots of hugs Dancer <3

Beautiful post. Thanks for sharing @Dancer! I am autistic too and can see the positives as well as the struggles it brings. We need more advocates like you :) Other celebrities with autism that I would add to your list are Chris Packham, Greta Thunberg and Anne Hegarty! <3

Maybe somethings don't get better, but we do. We get stronger. We learn to live with our situations as messy and ugly as they are. We fix what we can and we adapt to what we can't. Maybe some of us will never fully be okay, but at least we're here. We're still trying. We're doing the best we can. That's worth celebrating too ❤
