Have you ever been genuinely upset by a story?

Well, the thread title kinda says it all. but I'll tell you what inspired me to do this thread hehe. Well, I am an avid fan of Ben Bova and his books (fantastic!) and am currently on Moonwar - the sequel to Moonrise. Anyway, last night I was reading it and I got so upset because one of my faveourite characters got raped and murdered :crying: and this guy who she likes was next to her and he couldn't do anything to help and I was :crying: cos I wanted someone to stop it. After that the guy who was next to her (virtual reality...) was completely upset and traumatised kinda and he was given some tranquillisers to put him to sleep. But in his sleep an assasin slit his throat :crying: but it's ok because nanomachines in his blood stop the bleeding and he lives... :)

But it was so depressing :( it better have a fucking happy ending!

Yeah, a book by Jeannie Brewer called A Crack In Forever - it's basically a soppy love story, but it's really harsh - the guy has AIDS and eventually dies - and it makes me cry everytime. God, I can't believe I'm admitting this, lol

Don't think so, as that wouldn't be the type of book that I would read. Upset by films though, or if not upset then at least emotional.

ive just started reading Jennifer Government by Max Barry and its upsetting to a certain extent. Its set in this hyper-capitalist future where even the police and the government are privatised, and this guy has phoned an ambulance to come get a girl thats been shot and bleeding on the floor, but the ambulance service is like "ok, is she a member of a paying customers? can i have your credit card details?" because even the ambulance service is privatised. The book is mainly a comedy one but that scene is quite sickinening

I was like that after I finished Catch 22 for the first time as well! I just put it down and thought "Fuck, now what do I do?" It took me a good few days to get my head straightened out again and stop thinking about it all the time!
