Being insulted for watching TV & films rather than reading novels

Many people have talked down to me with contempt because I watch television shows and films, telling me that I should read novels instead. They claim that they never watch TV. They say that TV and films are 'low culture' that are 'for ****' and that intelligent people don't watch them, but read novels instead. I was forced to read novels at school, which I hated because I found them boring. I've had my intelligence tested and it's significantly above average. The vast majority of people frequently watch TV and films, so what's this anti-TV & anti-film snobbery about?

Many people proudly proclaim that they never watch TV, as though that makes them superior to the vast majority of people who do - as though never watching TV is proof of being a cultured genius.
