It can be both. Tagging is not art, the only people who enjoy tagging is the taggers. Proper graffiti is art though and can be enjoyed by everyone.

In bristol there is a lot of graffiti, Like proper graffiti and some of it is beautiful, It makes the city so vibrant and bright, But when people think theyre an artist because they have a spray can and write "Cock" and other such shit everywhere, I dislike that.

The bright colourful graffiti looks cool but if it's just profanities and or insults I.e. soandso is a slag (sorry) then that's not art and should be banned as its humiliating someone

If you look at it in a legal context, no matter how beautiful it is it's still classed as a crime

This. Holy hell man you're still here too. There's a couple of decent eastern European artists round my area now, doing some top quality works. Looks damned good!

From time to time I pop in a have a look. I first signed up in May 2001; 17 years ago :) But it's very different now and has more of a focus on helping people rather than a being a place to socialise.

What a splendid debate topic; I'm glad this was found. :)

Authentic grafitti is art, and one such street artist is Banksy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy He used to be secretive until his identity was discovered and published in a national newspaper, namely the Daily Mail. Banksy's art rails against the establishment. His street art is politically charged and the attention of passers-by.

Such street art is at its best when it makes a social comment that makes us ponder. Except what if somebody scribbles their name on a toilet door or across a wall belonging to a private property? That to me is vandalism.

Recently, the high wall surrounding my country house was hit by vandals with cans of spray paint - sprawling metres of vile words - and costing hundreds to remove. Since then we installed cctv up in our trees that line the road and if the vandals are caught, I have instructed our security to beat them up while I the owner turns a blind eye. That way, they will not likely do it again and in my village I will be known for not being a pushover.

I think it can be both. Some graffiti is beautiful and takes skill to create, and they can be used to allow people to express themselves and get their message across to others but it is still illegal.

    Hi Mackyart,

While the graffiti design itself is art, painting/spraying it on someone else's property is a crime. It's a case of having the right intention (wanting to create beautiful art) but doing the wrong action (vandalising someone's property)x

    Much love <3

I agree. I think that a lot more graffiti would be considered to be art if it wasn't done in a way that disrespected other people and their property.
