People have been doing that for years. Remember Napster?

The crack down is more on people who set up websites with thousands of copyrighted mp3s rather than the individual user downloading off Kazaa...

If you only download MP3s, you'll never be in any danger. No sound file format can be infected, whether it is MIDI, WAV, MOD or MP3. The same goes with pictures, unless it is a self-executing picture. Essentially, a self-executing will have an EXE on the end.

When downloading from email, WWW or Winmx, always be on the lookout for EXE, COM, BAT and SCR files. If you intentially download any of those above types, then scan the buggers.

When Napster was closed down, it was the company itself that was sued. Now their suing the users

Nope, the crackdown is on anyone who has uploaded files. There was a load of fuss because some people had only uploaded four music files and were getting subponead (sp), but since they were breaking the law, there's nothing they can do.

Or any compressed files, particularly ones that contain any of the above.
Also note that because Windows looks at the contents of a file as well as the extension, some files (for example .pif files, which are normally pictures) are executed as an exe, even when they are not.
Also remember to look out for double extensions (eg dido.mp3.exe etc.)
