Are the Northern Alliance just after power?

What do you think is gonna happen if/when the taliban are 'overthrown' so to speak. The northern alliance officials have been guaranteed a place in a new form of leadership, but are we sure that there motives are as good as they make out? Or will they just have achieved power, and take over as a new dictatorship, terrifiying a country? I dont really have an opinion on this, just wanted to know what you think, coz u probably all know much more about this than me. <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif">

The idea at current is to merge all of the differnet parties into one central 'fair' government. This government must include representatives from both the northern alliance and the taliban as they represent the majority of the population. As well as this there are other smaller minorities and outside intrest will have an influence, mainly american as they want bin laden and his barmy mob and russia who have intrest through the checneyan conflicts. In answer to your original question, yes the northern alliance do want power, and will commit attrocities with it, so it is now the job of the un to install peacekeepers and then sort this government !

In a C4 documentory last night, some young girls said that they where just as afraid of the NA troops as they where the Taliban (from the point of view of rape etc)

The NA are every bit as bad as the Taliban...In the paper this morning there was a little blurb about the various faction leaders within the NA and it was terrifying.

The NA may start off in an equal government with the other ethnic groups but I suspect it will come down to whoever has the largest number of soldiers.

Unfortunately a UN mission will have to be setup in Afghanistan to keep these people from raping and pillaging.

As much as I hate the UN, I think they will be the only people who can do this and that will satisfy all the different parties involved.

what, u think the NA are angels? i think NOT.

the NA are descended from the mujahideen. listen to any Soviet military men who served in afghanistan, and u will find that the majority of them are EXTREMELY scared of that lot. stories of being skinned alive etc are quite common.

the majority of soviet servicemen always carried an extra grenade "just in case".

and these guys aren't gonna change, really. the NA are putting on a nice face, but they're not nice. and the sooner we realise that, teh sooner we can go about setting up a proper and stable government.

who says there angels ? i pretty sure blair and bush are fully aware of the capabilities of the na but its not possible for everything to be instantly how you'd like it, at present i'm glad they've booted out the taliban, but now the real work has to begin. The images of kids been allowed to fly kites, women show there faces, people allowed to play chess, posses pictures of living creatures its a taste of normality they have for so long craved ! Whats more the na and moderate talibans must have a say in the new government for it to work, if they don't then your back to square one !

If you don't plan something, it can't go wrong

What'll happen with the winter now?
If we have troops on the ground and the NA are not about to 'play ball' with the USA and UK, or if it is part of an NA and Taliban plot, then will the soldiers be more vunerable once they are held in the grip of an afghan winter?

I'm not surprised that the women of Afghanistan are scared of the NA - with war , comes Rape. It happened in Vietnam and in world war II. Women are raped in wartime. Bloody pathetic.
Why do we not see women in the streets of Afghanistan now - becauise they are not free!!

    byny,

You cant really expect them to throw off their burkas and run naked through the streets just a few days after being liberated...Give them a little time to get adjusted..There are a thousand times more free than just a week ago.
