I am absolutely MAD!

I am absolutely mad

As you know, some bastard hacked my email account and changed my password and secret question.

I emailed MSN help and they sorted it out for me and told me that the other person accessed my account after they changed the password and question.

I went into town today to purchase something using my credit card. Oddly, my card my declined, even though I had £400 left until I reached my limit.

The MSN technican sent me a new password to the account which was hacked.

I signed into the account and there was an invoice (sent yesterday - I could not access my account then) from a site (I have never visited it) which stated:

"Thankyou for submitting to our online form Pearson.
As soon as we receive the message we will contact you if necessary"

I did not order anything, so I presume this hacker did. This might explain why my card was declined.

The thing is, I don't understand how they acquired my credit card number, because it is not in my account (I will recheck).

I am about to phone my credit card company.

Does having a firewall help? I mentioned this before but if someone is getting your details then having a firewall will help, wont it

Is your secret word your mothers maiden name? and is this used for your card account? or ever worked out your porn star name over the net....cos all these details are what hackers go for

    Update:

I rang my card company and one question I asked was the date and nature of the last transaction. Thankfully, it was one that I made (23rd of June).

The amount that I have spent on the card seems awfully high - so high in fact that I don't think I have spent all of it.

A statement has been sent which should (fingers' crossed) resolve this.

My card has now been blocked.

I am still exceptionally curious about why an order had been placed and why I received that reply.

Say someone purchased something over the internet, does it take a certain period for it to register with your card company, or is it done instantaneously?

I have emailed the Hotmail technician and asked if I could have details of the hacker. I am awaiting a reply.

I am just about to email the site in which an order was apparently made (it's a bloody woman's shoe shop!), to ask for the nature of the purchase.

The following message was sent on June 25. Does it to you sound as though a purchase was made?

"Thankyou for submitting to our online form Pearson.
As soon as we receive the message we will contact you if necessary"

It is June 26 today. I wonder whether an order placed yesterday would have appeared my credit card company's computers?

Nope, I phoned up the helpline and got all the details over-the-phone.

The following message was sent on June 25 (i.e. when I still couldn't access my account). To you, does it sound as though a purchase was made?

It is June 26 today. I wonder whether an order placed yesterday or the day before (I couldn't access my account on either days) would have appeared on my credit card company's computers by now?

Have you been to the site of this shoe shop? Is there any form you can submit apart from to make an order? E.g. to make an enquiry?

Is your card number anywhere online, like have you got a passport with it on?

It all seems a bit strange. Shall I tell you what I really don`t understand? Why if someone had got your card number, would they make an order online using your email address for you to find the evidence, when they could use any email address. If that`s what they`ve done then they really don`t know what they`re doing.

If you haven`t got your card number online anywhere, like a passport, then the next explanation that springs to mind is that this is someone who knows you. The easiest way to hack an email account is by social engineering to someone you know. I`ve seen it done, it`s SO easy. So don`t make your security questions too obvious people! Is it at all possible that anyone could have got your card number too? Is there anyone that would want to and be able to do that to you?

Of course, if it turns out that there hasn`t been an order made to that website, but your card number has been used fraudulently, then the two things would seem to be uinconnected.

    1) My email account HAS been hacked - the technican said that. Someone changed my password and my secret question and accessed it thereafter, i.e. when I couldn't!

    2) My secret question was very hard to guess - so much so that I sometime forgot it myself.

    3) No one I know knows my password, answer to secret question or suchlike.

    4) The email address on the message was mailorder@hotter.co.uk. The 'mailorder' part suggests that it was an order.

    This is all seriously freaky.

The hacker must have changed my personal settings.

There is a NEW email address on my list that I've never heard of - I wonder whether this is the hacker. But why would he or she add his or her own address? God sake. It's gez08@hotmail.com. Anyone know this?

Aw damn you beat me, I was so proud of myself for recognising the picture on the profile from the 'Pictures Of The Siters' thread..

The whole thing sounds really weird to me, I know loads of people have said this but is there any way of contacting the website you got the e-mail from, to get an e-mail sent to the account of recent transactions? You know, like tracking information. Although to me it seems like a really bad coincidence, the hacking and the credit card thing.

But yeah, I'd do what badabing said and abandon the hacked account. All seems really dodgy to me, could be best to start from scratch.

No, it couldn't be an ex. girlfriend or my girlfriend.

Yep, I've emailed the site from which I recieved that email - I stated what had happened and asked for the nature of the purchase. I wonder whether they will give me details, though.
