Internet and Social life

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Has the Internet and computer use taken off you at any time in ur life, is it starting to get to a point where you are dependent on the computer and you are becoming more anti social..During the day i cant find to get myself away from the computer only whenever i have to do something else, i spend alot of my time on the computer.
How many hours roughly a day do u think you would spend on the Internet? I would probably spend near to ten hours, prob more depending on when i go to sleep and awake.

I spend quite a lot of time on the the internet, mainly just to chat to my boyfriend as we dont get to see each other that often and have to find other ways of communication.

Id say I spend an average of 5hrs on the internet a day, maybe more.

Nope, I've never been that social. Most of my hobbies and interests in my spare time have been ones that are best/easier to do alone.
I've never been the type of person who feels they need to be surrounded by other people, and certainly not the centre of attention. I don't have the feeling that I need to belong to a group of people either. I'm happy to be on my own.
Computers have always featured in my life somewhere, and the Net is just another way of using them, and in many ways a better way - rather than playing games.

So, no, the Net doesn't interupt my social life. It doesn't make me anti-social. I spend quite a bit of time on the net though. Up to five hours a day (though logged on far longer than that - often downloading), which is bad I suppose, but if someone invited me out, then nine times out of ten I would go, I wouldn't miss the Net.

I spend most of my time on the net, but that's cos I have nothing else to do. I'd much rather be out socialising if I had the choice, but I have boring mates who are all away at uni or work evenings or are on the other side of the world

I spend loads of time on the net. Like Faith, it's because I've got nothing better to do, and I'd much rather be out socialising. But most of my mates live quite far away, so we use MSN and stuff to chat.

When I'm on the net I tend to spend a lot of time on sites like this, which I enjoy because they're still kinda social, you're still talking with lots of different people. But I feel like I can be a bit more confident on the net as well, whereas in person I tend to be a bit more shy.

    same here!

edit: it's also my main news and communications source...especially when I'm away with no tv.

I've gotten into the habit lately of logging on, then fucking off to the PlayStation2 and playing Pro Evolution Soccer, checking back

I do that as well, only mostly away to play Enter the matrix or splinter cell, its just the lifestyle i have for now.

I use the net to chat to my girlfriend and, when I'm not, when I have nothing else to do. I won't be using it often when I return to uni in Sept.

Yes , if given the choice between going out with friends and staying in on the computer I would prefer to do the former.

Sadly , my mates are pretty damn useless and dont want to do much , also my lack of self confidence has a major part to play.

Needless to say , I dont get out much. :banghead:

The internet is a big part of my life at the moment. I dont get out that much so basically this is my way of curing (sp) boredom.
If I was not on the internet id be sat bored sackless, watching 4 walls :)

I think the net (and computers generally) have become the new TV. Whereas 20 years ago we'd all be sitting bored in front of the TV now we're sitting bored in front of our computer screens! Although the net isn't as good as real socialising in the fact that we're all communicating technically we are still socialising - just with people we've never met, mainly to pass mutual boredom though it has to be said. I don't think there's anyone who would seriously turn down an offer to go out with their mates for the net is there? :eek2:

I think people chatting like this on the internet is far more healthier then sitting at home watching TV and doing nothing, now if you could hook your pc up to a treadmill it would be physically healthier!!

TV and PC's are merging ever closer

Just saw this on sale today a combined HiFi and PC

I thinkthe internet will help bring people together based on their interests rather then their location .. just look at some of the other threads like Politics and you'll see some people from here but also some people that never venture out of that section!!

Plus theinternet is great for deals, I went to Italy for £4.50p return via an internet deal, won a holiday via the internet and got two jobs through it.

All they need to do it get rid of the SPAM

Yep. I agree. I remember when I used to have nothing to do many years ago. Sure, I'd play computer games, and read magazines, but I mainly used to sit there, monging out infront of the telly, watching absolute crap. At least the Net is interactive, and you do participate in things, such as chat, or bulletin boards like this one. You have to use your mind, and actually think!

I don't usually spend much time on the net, maybe an hour a day, but because of study leave for A Levels I've been working/revising at my computer, and I've had the internet on all the time to distract me :)

I'd never actually let it get to the point where I'd rather go on the computer than go out though- my social life and other things are far more important!

I have become quite a bit anti-social. I do spend most of my days on the computer and on the 'net unless there is something important that me and my sister have to go and do or if she is in school and I need to go and do something really, really important before she comes home from school for like a vacation break or a weekend.

    Once I get a job, I won't be around.

In the evenings I do other things.

I spend between 6-10 hours on the net. All depends on how long I stay at work. I don't have internet at home (yet!) so now evening/weekend surfing for me. But when I get my new PC at home I suspect I'll spend a little time on-line at home. Mainly for downloading and stuff though.
