Conscription ????

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,324 The Mix Honorary Guru
IF and it's maybe not such a big if, we the UK take many casualties a lot of you here are of conscription age.

Will you fight or will you run ?

My guess is that here on this BB alot, not all will think of some reason why you won't fight.

Here's a tip you might want to practise: drop to the ground and cover your head when ever you hear a loud unexpected bang.

Considering the current state of our forces I wouldnt be surprised if some kind of conscription was needed if we get involved in a large war.

Id like to think I would fight..It would scare the shit outta me to get sent somewhere like Afghanistan but id probably go if asked.

If I was called up I'd probably shit a brick but I like to think I'd go.

I'm ashamed to say it, but i think i would probably not go if at all possible. Or if i did, it wouldn't be to fight - there are other jobs that can be done that don't involve combat. Aren't there......?

Yes there are non combat jobs but you would have to fight if it came to it. To be honest if it goes to conscription the shit has hit the fan and you would be heading for the frontline.

I wouldn't fight (presumably Afganistan), because I don't agree that it is the thing to 'do'. I wouldn't 'run' eather, I would quite happly inform the authorities of my oppinions.

    Go where and fight?
I suspect Bin Laden is now in Peshawar in Northern Pakistan. The hub of mujahadin activity since the good old days of the 80s-here he can count on popular support if a showdown occurs.
If you think that a russian invasion of afghanistan sparked all this -what do you think a usa invasion of afghanistan/pakistan will do?
    I seriously dread to think.

Well if the shit hits the fan I guess we'll all get to meet in some forsaken corner of the world. Thank you folks for backing us up.

I wouldn't wait to be called up. If things looked bad I'd sign up willingly. Better to get a job doing something you would be good at, I would hopefully join the Royal Armoured Corps, at least that way I have a couple of inches of hardened steel and ceramic protecting me.

yup, let's send those expendable working class boys off to the frontline. Cannon fodder ahoy! Shades of 1918......i'll go, i'll go, back for christmas, jeeesus...lay down my life to defend tony blair and his government? 70% of those in this country didn't even vote for him!

Peeps aer igonring the fact that conscription is politically untenable, and those who would fill most of the places, traditionally, (males, 18-25) are woefully less fit, too fat, and utterly incapable of fulfilling the roles and completing the required training. If there were to be an invasion, we'd be fucked! I blame playstation, lager and drugs, and rock n rol, and university, and education and commies!!!

lay down my life to defend tony blair and his government?

If it comes down to conscription then you can bet youre gonna be defending more than Tony and his pals. You will be defending your home, your family and your way of life.

If conscription is called for them we would be fucked without taking into account the fitness of our men.

Has it not occured to anyone that the coming war (if I dare use that phrase) can not be won with troops alone? The troops have one function: to get rid of governments (e.g. the Taleban) that obstruct free thought by military force. Far bigger weapons (and the ones that'll finish the job) are education, free media and so on. The BBC World Service is the biggest gun we have.

    OK
If a person - say balddog for example - really felt the need to defend his/her country so badly then he/she wouldn't be sitting around waiting to be conscripted. If it means that much to you - go and join up now.
Myself, theres no way I'd fight in a war.
If a madman came to my door and tried to kill my family I'd defend myself, If another power tried to take over the country and stop me wearing skirts or being educated I would resist (like they have in Afghanistan against the Taleban) but there is no way I would go to another country and kill other people.
The thing we all have to see is those people who got in those planes and died for their beliefs actually had more balls than anyone of us because they were prepared to pay the ultimate scrifice. I'm not saying it's right but they obviously found a cause they were prepared to die for! Being marched over to Afghanistan (For example) by the government is not a cause I am prepared to die for.
As for 'having to go' - there's is no way you would have to go! not if you are a consciencious objector.

byny, If my country needs me then I will be there and I will enlist. Fortunately we have a professional volunteer army already. It will do a good job in whatever role it finds itself.
there is no way I would go to another country and kill other people.

What if a regime were setup in France and we saw every woman and child in the country tortured and butchered. Would you still refuse to go and kill someone in a different country.

So you are perfectly happy to kill to protect you and yours but you wont kill to protect others and theirs?
The thing we all have to see is those people who got in those planes and died for their beliefs actually had more balls than anyone of us

BULL FUCKING SHIT....These people prefer a 'glorious' death to a mediocre life. They flew those planes into the WTC in the belief that they would go to paradise and be pleasured by 70 odd virgins for eternity..If you believe so strongly in something like that then it takes no courage to kill yourself.

If they are so damn brave then why dont they attack the US forces in Saudi that they are so pissed about? Theyd get slaughtered thats why. Terrorism can achieve massive death casualties with the minimum of effort on the terrorists part.

Sometimes the defence of your country starts in another. In these days of missiles which can be launched from hundreds of miles away it would be a good idea not to let them launch at all. In these days of terrorism, where the is no standing army, it is better to attack them in theor training bases, wherever they may be - UK/US/Libya/Yemen/Syria/Afghanistan...
The thing we all have to see is those people who got in those planes and died for their beliefs actually had more balls than anyone of us because they were prepared to pay the ultimate scrifice. THAT is the real question. NOt are your willing to fight, or if you are willing to kill, but are you willing to DIE for something. There can be no greater sacrifice than to lay down your life for something you believe in.

Baldog whats all this "70 odd virgins" shit about!Ive seen loads of posts mentioning all sorts of figures-35,65,70,78 -whats the true figure?Do some terrorists drop out on particular missions if there are not enough virgins on offer?
Those hi-jackers died with deep political/religious motivations not thoughts of virgins.Plus they have attacked US forces in Saudi before.

    "minimum of effort"

minnimum of effort? Blowing both towers of the WTC did not require 'minimum of effort' I'm not saying it a good thing. But it certainly required alot of time and effort (and of course money)

I myself believe in this country, and I would gladly give my life if need be in order to protect it. Our country is a bigger thing than any of us, I feel it is better to sacrifice a few to save many more. I also believe that no one anywhere should be able to threaten our country and not face the conscequences.

conscription is a terrible idea, you cant force patriotism onto some one. if they dont want to take a live to protect another life then thats a personal choice, its all down to each individual's set of values.

some one is gonna end up dead or injured, does it really make it any better that its a stranger from abroad rather than a stranger from this country?
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,324 The Mix Honorary Guru
Where do you want to fight the enemy here in the UK or elsewhere ?

Better elsewhere and don't worry Ska someone else will have to do the fighting for you. You won't have any problem enjoying the freedoms someone else has had to die for though will you.

That's what pisses me off is all the people with "killing is something I can't do" attitude but let others do it for them. I say again ; if you won't fight for your country piss off somewhere else.

And if I show you my dark side
will you still hold me tonight
and if I open my heart to you
and show you my weak side
    what would you do

    soapbarbpy,

Do a google search for the words Quran, Martyr and virgins and you will have your answer. The correct number is 72 virgins.
Those hi-jackers died with deep political/religious motivations not thoughts of virgins

Exactly how do you know that? Can you read the minds of dead men?...The thoughts of paradise and the virgins therein is a big part of their religious motivations.
minnimum of effort? Blowing both towers of the WTC did not require 'minimum of effort'

Well it depends on your definition of effort. They expended 19 men and a few hundred dollars of equipment on the WTC attack...Terrorism takes a lot less effort than full scale war. The movement of a couple of dozen suicide bombers into the states and their taking over of planes takes a lot less effort than actually organising an army and fighting.

I have no cause I would die for.
I would not die for my country...and anyway - I don't think Wales is in the 'war' is it.

Those hijackers did not kill themselves to get a good time iwith a bunch of virgins - they had a very strong belief.

So....just let the superb volunteers go and do it for you? If you care that much - enlist.

    I don't care that much.

And.... Why haven't you marched into Afghanistan and protected the women and children from the taleban yet? Are they not worth saving?

I'd like to see you care so much for your country that you would be prepared to die in a plane taking others with you! Not going to happen is it because you believe yourself to be so immune from the wrath of other 'less civilised' countries.

I have no cause I would die for.

    Im sorry.
they had a very strong belief.

Do some reading before making ignorant statements. The ONLY reason these people martyr themselves is because they believe they will go to paradise. You think if Allah wrote they would go to hell if dying for their cause, they would still do it?? THINK.
Why haven't you marched into Afghanistan and protected the women and children from the taleban yet? Are they not worth saving?

Im not a soldier..I merely pointed out that you would be perfectly happy killing a man that was attacking you but not killing a man attacking other innocents.
I'd like to see you care so much for your country that you would be prepared to die in a plane taking others with you!

My god, I should hope not...If I were going to die for my country then I SURE AS HELL wouldnt take innocent civilians with me.
And as an American you think your life is worth more than any asian! Typical

Um, in case you missed it. Im English you racist git.

And those so-called 'rights' can be taken away at any time by anyone strong enough to do so. That is (one reason) why they are an utter fallacy.

Apologies Baldog if I sounded racist , that wasn't my intention. By birth I am English too - and yes, I must have missed you saying you are English.
The thing is that Islam has never said 'Perform a suicide Hijack and you will go to paradise' if that was the case than all followers of Islam would do so -
these people have distorted the Islamic faith to fit their own cause. We should not be saying all followers of Islam are bad people when that is obviously not the case.

Once again - sorry for the insult that you felf because of my comments before
  • Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,324 The Mix Honorary Guru
The thing is that Islam has never said 'Perform a suicide Hijack and you will go to paradise'

Well actually it does say exactly that. If you die a martyr then you will go to paradise..Of course most Muslims are smart enough to realise that killing 7000 innocents aint gonna win you many points in Allahs big book of fun.
We should not be saying all followers of Islam are bad people when that is obviously not the case.

I dont think I was...Most Moslims are normal people, same as you and I. Bin Laden and his ilk have bastardised the religion and used Islam to justify their crimes.

RE - your comments on me being American...No worries..It should say under my name that im from Hertfordshire, UK.

Thats exactly why you need strong institutions like the army or even the police. They make sure that you don't have to put up with the "bullying" of a stronger neighbour. Without the Army where would we be? Bowing down to every invader for another 1000 years, thats where. You owe the men and women of our fighting forces a lot more than they owe you, it's just a pity you don't appreciate the work they do.
