How legal is your PC?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Ok, we have all downloaded something copyrighted, but some of us rely on programs like KaZaA Lite and iMesh for software.

So how much of the stuff on your pc is illegal?

My view is if you can get it for free why pay.

Well pretty much 95% of my pc is illegal :D

    OS - Copied by mate
Games - Bought quite a lot, but mostly leeched
Music - nearly 6gig of mp3s some ripped from cd's and downloaded from winmx
Programs - Photoshop, MS Office, Lotus etc, all downloaded
Roms - Downloaded about 60 roms for just about every console and arcade emulator there is, which is quite a bit.

/me looks out window for police :D

I downloaded my Office program, but it's free anyway (Openoffice.org).

Anyway...to go off topic...you're avatar's Commander Keen, yes?

Erm, I'd say less than 10% of the softwaare is legal. And about half my music. Oh, I'm such a naughty boy - spank me! :D

There's no way I could afford all the software on it, I couldn't even afford half of it. Some of it, such as Photoshop, is just something I wouldn't be able to justify normally. However, it means I am learning how to use what is considered the industry standard software for editing images, which means that I'm one more person who knows how to use Photoshop, rather than any other package, and that means that if I get a job where I have to use it, then that will be to Adobe's advantage in the long run. Of course, in the short term view it's software piracy. It's a sort of double edged sword really for Adobe. But in the long run they bennefit as more and more companies will invest in their software as it's the software that people are familiar with.
It's the same with many other packages, such as MS Office.

    Fireworks
    Opera
    UT2k3
    Paintshop pro
    Command and conquer generals
    About 30 films
    3000 songs
    Windows XP pro
    Winrar
    Sim City 4
    The sims
    Rally championship xtreme

And quite a bit more. I have mIRC legally though, and winamp, and webcamxp, but they're all free software anyway.

I forgot about shareware and freeware. Of course I've got a whole load of that too. :)

i feel so honest. lol. Well, I have a lot of music on my computer that my brother downloads off kazaa thats illegal, but i dont think there is THAT much. Programs, well, if it's a good game I buy it if it's not I delete it / stop playing on it. So I guess... erm, a small fraction, bits and bobs here are illegal. Oh lil_kazzy - isn't Opera free?

Good point. Check the licences of your software. Do you have any shareware on them? Are you sure about the licences on that shareware.
I'll give you an example. Do you have Winzip? It's shareware. There's a limited trial period, after which you're supposed to register it? Have you? Thought not. OMG, you've got illegal software on your computers! See how easy it is to have illegal software?
However, this thread is about illegal copies of legitimate software, and most people have some somewhere.

My PC is about as legal as a gun toting murderer with 50 kilos of cocaine in his pocket :D

Mainly because any software that was bought is installed on all the computers in my home network thus breaking the lincence agreement.
