Why shouldn't it be held in China?

Er...because they put a bid in, which was accepted by the IOC. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

So, answer the other question. Why shouldn't China get to host the games?

i dont see what china has that nobody else has to offer. im not at all sure it would be safe because of the vast population problems they have and overcrowding. just seems a little too soon for them.

Why do you say China is overcrowded???
Just because they have a massive population doesnt make it overcrowded. The most crowded place on earth is actually Britain, there are, on average 600 people per sq/km here, with higher numbers in the cities. China has more than enough space and resources for it's population, although it could benefit from having a better system of running it, and distributing the wealth. It is thought that in terms of wealth China will overtake America by the year 2020.
As for the executiion thing, why should the world care about internal matters of another country? The papers have only printed how many people have been executed, and not what this is as a percentage of the population. If they did that they would probably find a lot of similarities to the USA. So i think that china should hold the games.

ya huh, exactly why it's not ready yet

er....hmm....sorry but where the fuck did you get that from?

do you mean Tianaman (sp i know) Square? that was a long time ago

theres more deaths in the USA due to guns etc etc i know, but they can host it because they're in a position to. what you've said hasn't convinced me at all.

Mexico city is a city, we are talking about countries here.
What i was saying is that China is rich enough to be able to pay for the games and to provide for the athletes.
I got the little snippet about 2020 from the news on TV, where some of the IOC were criticising the US/french government for meddling.

Sorry, I was actually just playing devil's advocate there.

I agree with MD (for once!), I don't believe that China is ready. The decision is purely a political one and has nothing to do with their ability to host the games.

Do you honestly believe that in seven years time they will be geared up for a massive influx of 'free press' journalists and tourists? Do you think that they will welcome them with open arms and that the Chinese public will be allowed to meet and great, to talk openly? It will take a MASSIVE change in national policy to allow this and will have an even bigger impact on their internal politics.

Its a disgrace to allow China to host the games. Im sure they will see this as some kind of approval of their regime there.

It amazes me that the UN, EU, US etc get all frenzied over Slobodan Milosovic for example and then they turn round and allow China to host the games. China, a country who only a daily basis commits some of the same crimes the Serbians committed. I wonder just how much money the IOC received from China to pick them.

It will be interesting to see how many thousands of homeless people are killed in the host city to make it presentable for the cameras.

    Truly a sad day

China has always been an introverted sleeping giant in the political world. It seems they (oops, should say the ruling minority) want very little to do with the modern Westernised world and close themselves in and do what they want behind their own borders.

Maybe this is a signal that China and it's citizens are gonna be taking a much more active role in world affairs??
