SARS now shuts Toronto SCHOOL, not hospital

Most people in the world don't understand how different Canada is as a nation. Canada was formed after a very bloody civil war in the US which was faught over slavery AND states rights....including the right of a state to leave the union. So Canada's provinces have a lot of independence...including the right to leave the federation. Anyways, this really comes to light in the fight against SARS. Vancouver handled their crisis a long time ago in an efficient manner. Toronto is a mess. Because they were lax in isolating patients with symptons and didn't even listen to warnings from their Nurses, a teen like us went to school with he symptons of SARS after visiting a hospital treating SARS patients. (See the trouble is the virus lives on surfaces for 24 hours after a person with SARS has touched it.)

So now the school is shut down. If it turns out the student has SARS, Toronto is screwed...and so is everyone, including my good friend's mother, who has to travel to Toronto for business.

Well the casualty rate has still been shown to be very low. It is certainly worrying but there are many worse problems in the world, I am sure they will have it under control soon..........

Maybe not. The infected teen went all over the place. And every place he or she touched while infected, could have a virus that lives 24 hours on its surface for someone else to touch.

In Toronto's case, commerce put pressure on the WHO to lift travel restrictions too soon. If it was handled right in the first place, as was the case in Vancouver, the crisis would now be over.

    It may only be beginning.

More than 6,400 people, including 2,000 from the school, are now in quarantine in greater Toronto after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome resurfaced six days ago.

I think Toronto has lost control of this. We'll see in the next few weeks if I'm right. Remember, an infected student like us was in school and all over his neighborhood touching things that would have an active virus on them for 24 hours. This was on Yahoo today.

Authorities seeking to control the spread of a new cluster of SARS (news - web sites) cases have quarantined more than 5,000 people in Toronto and warned that the number of suspected cases will likely rise.

The latest people to be isolated in Canada's largest city were 1,700 students and staff at a suburban Toronto high school, who were told to stay home for 10 days after a classmate showed symptoms of SARS, health officials said Wednesday. Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy in Markham was also closed until June 3 as a precaution
