About TheSite.org

TheSite.org is a charity-owned advice site for young people, and its resources are geared up for a British readership. The most popular parts of the site are articles about employment and relationships.

More about us here:
http://www.thesite.org/about/us/mission_statement.html
http://www.thesite.org/about/us/history.html

Our bulletin boards cover many subjects, of which politics plays only a small part, and we are not an anti-gun lobby site, as some of our most recent users seem to think.

The main aim of having a politics board here is to encourage young British people to talk about British politics, as many of them feel excluded from the political process and often do not vote.

Although American politics and gun laws are very interesting, and make for a good debate, they are not the primary focus of our politics boards.

We already have several America/gun threads, so for the time being we are asking our users to stick the existing threads, rather than starting any more new ones.

Thanks

Surely the discussion of foreign politics, including American, can do nothing but increase the interest of the apathetic British youth? If they come to this forum then they must have a slight interest anyway so why not allow them to see the full spectrum instead of forcing them to see only the farce we call politics in this country.

Seeing as how America is the most powerful nation on earth, they also play a massive part in the politics of our little islands. You should probably rename the forum to British politics if you wish to bar talk of international politics.

i realy do take offence to that!! this 'apathetic youth' to which you refer provides the largest non-US group of anti-capitalist demonstrators, regularly participates in political movements of the non-party kind, and you have the CHEEK to call us apathetic. the very fcat that a site such as this exists is that we are not APATHETIC. we may not care about gun control, but we care about the real issues of world politics - welfare, human rights, globalisation etc. and we also care about one another (not just brits but fellow humans everywhere). so there is NO WAY ON EARTH you can refer to us as apathetic. that is a stereotype of the most unjust kind. we care, and we show it too.

Karla, as one of the "yank" FNG's here I can understand Your wish to "stay on topic" as it were for the target audience this 'site is maintained for.

I'm hoping to use this 'site as a way to "pick" English brains on a variety of topics (some political and some not) and will refrain from postin' "Troll like" topics.

As to the apathy of English youth as far as politics? Join the club. Kids here don't exactly break their legs gettin' to the polls either.

Anyway, I hope We can learn a few things from each other (some might even be positive?) here.

Erm Dan, did you happen to miss the last general election or something???

35% of people didnt bother turning out to vote and the largest demographic group was from the 18-25 year olds. I know from my own experiences just how bothered the majority of todays British youth are about politics. My comments are completely valid and I will take you to any pub in the nation and prove it to ya. Its not CHEEK, its fact im afraid.

The people on this politics board are obviously an exception because they are already on a politics board. However I was talking about the general youth of today. It wasnt a personal statement against you personally Dan, dont get your knickers in a twist...Its true of the vast majority of todays youth and I find it amusing that you deny the fact despite it having been plastered over the news for months.

I don't think that you can restrict these comments to the 'youth' of this country anymore than another. Does the US have a high turnout? Why did 'Rock the Vote' come about?

I don't actually think that the election really gave many of the activist youth the choices they wanted - the differences between the political parties a very limited - and that it is PARTY politics where the apathy exists, not politics in general.

Man of Kent, I restrict those comments to the youth of this country because I am part of that youth. I dont have a clue about voter apathy in the states. I havent a clue what 'rock the vote' is.

I agree that the parties are almost identical these days but that really wasnt what this thread is about.

im 18 and i voted. we're no more apathetic politically in britain than the US i would imagine.

well the first time i posted a thread like this about the mission statement, it got deleted. i can only assume that it descended into madness and slander, not that karla would want to steal the limelight for herself! <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/wink.gif"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/biggrin.gif"> <IMG alt="image" SRC="http://www.thesite.org/ubb/tongue.gif">
