increasing tension in the Middle East

According to Reuters Saudi Arabian forces have been put on alert, and have mobilised 8 armoured battalions on the border with Israel, in response to a percieved buildup of Israeli forces.

My student's union has called an emergency general meeting to "discuss a motion, which condemns the recent attacks on the Palestinian people by Israel and revokes the motion recently passed at the guild council, which would prevent students campaigning over Palestinian rights."

Talk about the shit hitting the fan! <IMG SRC="eek.gif" border="0" ALT="icon">

I know in a scientific world, prophecies are usually ridiculed. But I can see Nostradamus' prediction on the destruction of Isarel by 2003 coming true.

Well I've decided Nostradamus' prophecies concerning the next few years I am going to believe them. I don't care if it is unscientific, they're too much of a coincidence for my liking.

And before anyone harps on about it being mumbo-jumbo. More people around the world believe in a big guy sitting on a big throne up in the clouds. And if you can believe that then you can believe anything IMHO.

A MILLION people took to the streets of the Moroccan capital, Rabat, two weeks ago in solidarity with the Palestinians. The march had all-party support, including the government, which felt it had to echo the popular mood even though it is a model "moderate Arab" regime. Even so, the Moroccan prime minister had to take refuge in Rabat's main railway station after young demonstrators pushed him about.

The British media did report that march. But it ignored the unofficial spontaneous demonstrations by high school students in the days before it. Similar spontaneous protests, some clashing with the police, have been taking place across the Middle East.

On the day Israel launched its attacks, thousands of Syrians gathered outside the UN office in the capital, Damascus, to shout pro-Palestinian slogans. Protests have grown since. Parties that are barely legal or are excluded from power under Syria's military regime have joined them.

The banners and flags reflect the competing political voices. There are images of Che Guevara, the left wing guerrilla fighter of the 1960s, pictures of the leader of the Lebanese Islamist movement Hizbollah, flags of the oppressed Kurdish minority, and others.

There are none of Syrian leader Bashar Al Asad. For the protesters, his words of condemnation of Israel are not enough. The protests are bringing hatred of his regime to the surface. The first leaflets for the protests called simply for support for the Palestinians. Then they began calling for the release of political prisoners in Syria.

A bigger wave of protest has swept neighbouring Lebanon. Over 1,000 doctors, lawyers and engineers marched to the US embassy in the capital, Beirut, earlier this month. A demonstration by young people outside the embassy two days earlier was more militant. Over 2,000 protesters stoned security forces.

Some 15,000 people marched in the port city of Sidon. The population of Lebanon is only four million. The march is equivalent to a quarter of a million marching in Manchester. There are similar protests in Egypt itself. It is the largest Arab state, with a population of 57 million.

You can see air. You can reduce its temperature until it liquifies, and there it is. In fact, that's the most ridiculous argument in support of prophecies I have ever heard.

People like Nostradamus made hundreds of very vague predictions. If only a few of these appear to come true, the other rubbish ones are completely forgotten.

Note the term "appear" to come true. People read these predictions and then bend events to try and suit them. The predictions are then twisted to appear even more accurate. Indeed, many of Nostradamus' supposed predictions are in fact made up ones that he never wrote himself.

And on the religion front, I am not personally religious - in fact, I regard it as almost as stupid as predictions. So your defence that millions of people are gullible and stupid so why isn't it okay for you to be? doesn't really wash.

I posted that article to show that therec is massive support for the Palestinians in the rest of the arab world! It is clearly Iarael that is in the wrong. The issue of suicide bombings has clouded the issue a lot noone condones the suicide bombings but Israel has been oppressing the Palestinians for decades long before suicide bombings took place!

There will also be a mass march in London in support of the Palestinians on Saturday May 18th starting at 12noon at Hyde Park and going to Trafalgar Square. Full details are here.

Yes...but the entire Arab world is full of fuckwits who think their idea of a good time is to die gloriously whilst killing children, women and other innocent civilians, in the foolish belief that noone will retaliate.
Palestine may have the support of the Arab world. But Israel has the support of the West. And in a total war, I know who my money will be on, and it won't be on an army that relies on outdated 1970's Russian equipment.

Out of curiosity, if there was a world war, who would you support??? The turd world, or your own countrymen?
If you say anything other than Britain then you can stage your rally in a large field, after digging your own graves and giving us a chance to set up a machine gun post or 3.

    Calm down mate..

Israel is cut off from Saudi Arabia by a strip of Jordanian land which is only about 25km wide. If an invasion was planned then they would roll right through that strip with the full permission of Jordan.

Interestingly, this is an offensive buildup of forces rather than defensive. The Saudi forces include three parachute Brigades. The rest being armour.

    DPsy,

Not sure what you mean really but this story is fact. The Saudi forces have moved 8 brigades to their border with Jordan, 16 miles from Israel.

Im not really sure why you are so angry in this thread. Its not anti-Israel.

You will always find nutcases, everywhere!!! But the problem is that it is quite accepted in most circles to blow yourself up in order to get martyrdom, in the arab world.

Maybe so, I was simply stating that there is an unusually large number of people in the Arab world willing to blow themselves, and whoever else is unfortunate to get in the way up.
As a proportion, don't you agree there is a larger proportion in say Iran or Lybia than there is in England or France?

No other culture on earth uses suicide bombers on civilian targets...I cant think of any in the history of man, other than arabic muslims.

Even the Japanese confined their suicide attacks to military targets.

We ourselves stopped intentionally targetting civilians at the end of the second world war, knowing it is futile. What did the attacks on the WTC do for the Muslims? Nothing, it was a minor pin prick on one of the most powerful nations on Earth.
What has America done in return?

Palestine, the terrorists continue to target civilians, even though they know it will result in the deaths and eventual destruction of their own homeland. I don't think the Israeli people and government would be AS angry if the terrorists targetted military and police targets.
Israel has responded by destroying Palestine's infrastructure, it's police force, it's communications.
The Pali terrorists have killed a few hundred civilians. Who will win in the long run?

Suicide attacks don't even conform to any logic i've ever heard of. Surely they'd be more victorious if they fought one on one against the Israeli military. But no, they attack civilians. Hmmm, sound strategic thinking.

    i agree with whowhere.

theres a large defference between the western world and the arab-muslim world,
the way we see reality and the way they do.
that what lead osama bin laden to his attacks on 11/9, he also called on his recent discovered tape to a jihad war against the "sinning" western world.
how have we sinned ? respected human life?
    human rights?

therefor, you can not talk to these kind of people who are willing to kill them self just to kill some others, because they have a twisted way of thinking.
and because of that you must handel them as they handel themselves , with power, thats the only thing they understand.

another example for their behavor is 20 years ago on the iran-iraq war - the irani's took hundereds and thousands of children and put a plastic key around their neck telling them its their key to heaven (same heaven where they say the suicide bombers go) and send them to walk on mine field , to blow themselfes up so the army could pass...
