Windows Media Player

when i try to play a certain file in windows media player the sound comes through but theres no picture. why could this be?
i've checked for updates and it cant find any. the file im trying to open is a .avi file and im using windows media player 9.0 on windows xp if that helps

    Go to http://www.divx.com/ and download the codecs pack on the left.

    nope.

    if i try to open it now in windows media player it tries to download a codec but says there was an error downloading it and it does the same as before.

    and if i open it in divx it says:

    this file contains an unknown video data.

    the video file you are opening contains video data that is not recognised by the DivX player

    the file contains the following type of data:

    video data: FOURCC code 'XVID'

    you may need to install a new video codec on your computer to watch this video.

    anymore ideas?
