Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
why do i keep getting pop up messages from 'messanger service' saying "i am a 19 year old girl and am looking for a boy in nUK come see my private webcam love Jaccinta"

and i just got another one sayin...

"*so and so* says:

JoJo Johnston and michael webb are no more"

how random and slightly sadistic??? does anyone else get these??? they wont mean anything will they... i mean really... are these people 'no more' or what???

What version of windows do you have?
Do you only get the messages when you go to internet sites?
    Is it a proper window?

yeh its like a proper window, one of those that says 'ok' at the bottom and a cross in the top right corner. its a brand new computer with windows XP and broadband, i haven't opened any dodgy emails or anything. Its not an internet window, its an actual 'windows' window that pops up.

i've only had them whilst ive actually been online as far as i can remember.

just a bit worried about this comment about these people being 'no more' and want to know why it was sent to my computer

Okay I'm not sure about XP so some of the locations of these things might be different, but check

    Start--settings--network and dialup connections

In there you should have a connection for your cable modem or whatever broadband thing you have. Open that. Click properties.

If there is a box in there "client for microsoft networks" or "NWLink Netbios" click on them and uninstall them.

    Then go to

    Start--settings--control panel

    Open administration tools
    Open services

    Check for the "messenger" service
If it is marked as active stop it and then change it so it is disabled.

Get a virus checker and a firewall thing, like ZoneAlarm.

It's a new Net Spam, it uses an exploit in windows to send popup "messages" to your IP/network address. I do it at work to my colleagues, it's funny..

Here's a page with some info and a guide to stopping it

It's nothing to worry about, security wise.

    Enjoy,
    -Phil.
