velvet-underground.jpg HEROIN
" I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
'Cos it makes me feel like I'm a man
When I put a spike into my vein
And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same
When I'm rushing on my run
And I feel just like Jesus' son
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I have made the big decision
I'm gonna try to nullify my life
'Cos when the blood begins to flow
When it shoots up the dropper's neck
When I'm closing in on death
And you can't help me now, you guys
And all you sweet girls with all your sweet talk
You can all go take a walk
And I guess that I just don't know
And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago
I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas
On a great big clipper ship
Going from this land here to that
In a sailor's suit and cap
Away from the big city
Where a man can not be free
Of all of the evils of this town
And of himself, and those around
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know
Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life
Because a mainer to my vein
Leads to a center in my head
And then I'm better off and dead
Because when the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cos when the smack begins to flow
Then I really don't care anymore
Ah, when the heroin is in my blood
And that blood is in my head
Then thank God that I'm as good as dead
Then thank your God that I'm not aware
And thank God that I just don't care
And I guess I just don't know
And I guess I just don't know "

Heroin has been around a long time and has cuased some serious problems. I know from experience.
can we learn to live with it ? or is it even a possibility that it can be irradicated ?

It has been around a long time but I think that the move towards addicts using heroin over opium when both were made illegal really didnt help the situation.

I dont think you can ever erradicate harmful drug use, or drug use in general, you can suppress it again and again but it depends where you want to draw the civil liberties line.
"A country can not be governed that has to be perpetualiy conqeured"

Also it depends where you feel the supression of the drug use becomes more harmful than the drug use itself.

Personaly I dont think you will ever be able to really even make a good dent in the production of heroin, the worlds supply can be made on such a small area (see this note later for qoute).
There will always be a country or area outside of international law, mainly because the money involved is so high, everyone has a price, or at least enough people have anyway.

I think the way forward is to try and stop the demand by treating the addicts that we already have with residential treatment centers and then good follow through after that. It would cost a fortune but save in the longer term.
Also the areas that people live in contribute to the reason they use drugs, this needs to be addressed, better housing, facilites for children etc. I'm thinking of Hackney and Tower Hamlets in perticular because I know them relatively well. The deprevation there is very serious and its not surprising that people turn to rocks or junk.

duffy lad your talking bollox. there is a problem for the first couple of years.or usualy less .....a severe toothache can send an ex junkie back down the drain in his search for pain relief but your body does eventualy start producing it's natural opiates again.
medical evidence at the moment is that addiction to heroin does not damage your health. just wrecks your life.

and even in the first few years they may have a tolerance to opiates, but AFAIK general anaesthetic wouldnt be a problem.
