Bleep test

Hiya,

I am applying to become a fire fighter and went to an open day yesterday. They gave a presentation and described the physical tests that I will have to complete. One was a bleep test. I know what a bleep test is and how it works, but they said to pass, I will need a score of 9.6

What is this and how is it calculated?

Thanks in advance!

*shudders at the mere thought of it*

You have to run a certain distance before the recorded bleep, then turn & run back before the next bleep etc etc.
I don't know how the score is calculated tho.
    Nasty, nasty torment:nervous:

Don't worry, 9.6 is an absolute piece of piss to beat.

If for some reason you are amazingly unfit here are a few pointers:

Don't run fast and then pause at the ends waiting for the bleep.

At the lower levels don't use your arms, they aren't needed and you are just wasting energy.pace yourself, take it easy on the lower levels, breath deep - it helps a lot once you get to the harder levels (12 +)

    Thanks for the advice!

What does 9.6 mean though? Is it a level, time?

Ok, the bleep test is split into levels, each level consists of 10 beeps, at which point you need to get to the end of the line. It get's steadily faster and faster, making you run harder until you can't keep up.

    Say level 1: Beep (1.0) beep (1.1) beep (1.2) beep (1.3) etc

It says out loud every time you actually hit a main level.

It's not hard once they tell you what do, basically keep up with beeps as long as you can.

If you want to increase your fitness a combination of long distance work and shuttle runs will dramatically increase your bleep test score over time, just take it easy the week before the test, and don't do any training for 2-3 days before the test. Oh, and straight before the test do some stretches, and some walking around (don't jog - you do that in the early stages anyway, so it isn't needed and it's energy you want to save.)

Yer, 9.6 is not that bad if you're fit. I'm really not very fit, and I can get almost 9, so don't worry yourself too much.

If this is what they gave me in school i really wouldn't worry.

I got to into the 12 bracket, and i was really unfit at the time, being a couple of inches shorter than i am now, and weighing about 4 st. more.

I'd actually like to give that a go again, to see where i'd be. Then again i have had a few years of heavy smoking since then...

I have to do one of those tests before and at the end of each netball season. I find i perform better if i've warmed up and jogged a little beforehand as my lungs seem to respond better (being the unfit get that i am).

I think my level was about 9 and i was at average fitness so shouldn't worry too much. Good luck :)

    ass toning

Heya! I was wondering if anyone had tips for strengthening/toning muscles at the backs of your thighs, and your bum?!If they do not involve joining a gym, that would be even more helpful, since i'm not a member, and don't want to waste money joining, only to go once a week or whatever.

The bleep test is a piece of piss. You can almost walk the first 2-3 levels. Breathing is important and dont get distracted if other people are getting to beeps and waiting 5 seconds for the next one. Trust me you'll surprise yourself.
Dont always turn on the same foot. Pace yourself!
I broke my school record in my third year their I got to level 14.7.
jUst wondering what do you need to join the fire brigade in England?

Hello! The highest I have had is 11.2 and that was in Welsh Netball training. Most men get alot higher than that though.

I wouldn't worry, you will be fine!

    Good Luck!!!!

I feel confident about it anyway because I am quite fit. Just curious of the levels, because when I was younger (at school), I just kept running until I was knocked out, and took no notice of the levels!

Im not too fit, I remember getting over 9, I think it was actually 9.6 that I got!

So you should do it easily :)

That reminds me, one time the tape decided to have a spasm and it started going fast and the p.e. teacher was sat there winding it all back in for half hour hueahueahueahua

    aggghhh bleep tests *horrible memories*:nervous:

When I was athletic and actually did sport I used to get to about level 11 (which is good for a girl I guess), but I used to dread the bleep test. It take soo much energy out of you and the voice and the beeps are really scary! I used to have to do it every term at my old school, but that was a sporty school; now I reckon I wouldn't be able to reach level 9.
On the last bleep test day we recorded over the bleep test tape with the Beach Boys I get Around (god knows why someone chose that! - and we were only 13, hence we were entitled to do sad things like that). Oh well, it got us out of the test! :D
