Can i control it?

Hi

As you may or may not, i have been self harming on and off for the last 2 and half years. What confuses me is that i can go a while without doing it, and then it'll come back with avengance, and i'm wondering whether its safe that i have it like this.

I seem to use it as an emotional thing, which works most of the time, as i can't cry, i use it as a way to show my feelings to myself, and how i deal with stuff generally. I know this sounds stupid but it is how i do it.
What i'm wondering is, do i need help? i've always thought that it wasn't a serious enough problem to need a doctor, but i'm beginning to wonder.....

Thanks for any help.

I know what you mean about the on off thing, I used to be fine then if something tipped me over the edge that was it!

A few months ago I decided to get help, to be honest I didn't really think I needed it but I thought I may as well give it a try so I decided to see the councillor at my college once a week. So far, so good, I have had low days, but that is to be expected and things are gradually improving - that is, I feel I have more control over things, and if times get really tough, I know that one day I will be able to control myself not to self harm, and get my hurt out in other ways, i.e telling someone.

It's different for different people and it can take a person years to even think about going to see a doctor. Give it a go. For your sake. They can get you the help you need, and believe me, self harm is not an uncommon thing GP's see. It will help to get things off your chest at least. And remember there are always second opinions, if you are not happy with what your doctor says, go somewhere else.

But I can assure you, leaving it will only get worse.

Best of luck to you, PM me if you need to chat about anything. xxx

Its not stupid at all, you'd be amazed at how many people do exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason. It seems to be a way to release pressure/emotions.

The fact that you're realising that you might need help is a good sign :) Also posting on here is admitting you know there's a problem.

You've made the first step posting on here, make the second one and go and see a doctor or even just talk to someone you trust.

If you haven't dealt with the underlying problems, and developed some good new coping techniques for negative emotions, it will most likely come back to haunt you.

Go to your doctor and ask to be referred to a specialist.
