The "Last Book You Read" Thread

It's been almost a year since the last book thread was posted in...have we all stopped reading?! Decided it was time for a new one :)

I've recently read The Cuckoo's Calling and The Casual Vacancy. Both were a lot better than I was expecting, ending of The Cuckoo's Calling was pretty intense!

About to start reading An Apple A Day...I have very mixed views about the author so we shall see what I think of the book.

What have you been reading recently?

I finished The Shock of the Fall a few weeks ago too, really enjoyed it.

I've been reading some Inspector Montalbano stories recently following seeing the series on TV.

Now reading The Coffee Shop of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez. It's quite interesting but definitely written with a foreigner slant - and that isn't something I'd considered before.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. Honestly not quite sure how to explain it with words, so here are some appropriate smilies:
:yuck:   :crazyeyes  :eek2:

Think Simon Pegg summed it up best:

Whenever I am asked about a favourite book, I immediately think of The Wasp Factory. Iain Banks' beguiling novel is a funny, terrifying, beautiful piece of writing; a story told through the complex, compartmentalised thoughts of a calmly amoral, occasionally homicidal child, no more guilty of insanity than the questionable authority figures that surround this fractured youth. The Wasp Factory has stayed with me since the first of several reads and haunts me still, buried in my brain like maggots, the images appearing in my mind's eye like so many burning sheep on the horizon.

Amazing book, but not for the faint of heart..

Banks was brilliant in general. His death was a sad loss.

Agreed! The Film leaves so much out, the book is so much better!!!! With books, I think it's more because you can add your imagination and stuff to it, and it's like, -Watch movie- HOW DARE THEY LEAVE THAT BIT OUT!

    Such a good book.

Finished Sisterland last night and re-read To Kill a Mockingbird towards the end of last week. I loved it when I was 13, I loved it when I was 16 and I still love it now. Screw you Gove.

Just finished we were liars in one sitting. Was a good book, I did however guess the twist involving the liars early on which slightly ruined it. The last quarter of the book has made me sob though :(

The Manifesto on How to be Interesting. Aside from the pages dying my hands an odd orange colour, I loved it :D

Also been doing a lot of preparation reading for my PGCE, had a lot to fun re-reading books such as Five Minutes Peace, The Blue Balloon and I absolutely love Mirror by Jeannie Baker. Very clever book, showing the daily lives of two children from different cultures.
