Asking about sick leave in application forms?

I'm filling in a form for a job application and they have a section asking you to tell them how many days/periods off sick you've had in the last 2 years and details of any serious illnesses and accidents you've had in the last 5 years. Are they allowed to ask this kind of stuff in application forms? I've never come across it before.

They are allowed to do it, but because of the Equality Act 2010 many employers no longer do so. The reason is that if they reject an applicant based on their sick leave record, and that sick leave is due to a disability, then that is unlawful discrimination.

Usually they will ask this sort of information in a medical questionnaire which (allegedly) doesn't get seen by the recruiting managers.
