" So I say thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing, thanks for all the joy they're bringing, who can live without it, I ask in all honestly what would life be? Without a song or a dance, what are we? So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me "
    '' It's a beautiful day and I can't stop myself from smiling "

I did it and enjoyed it, feel that you could have used a question on 'what makes an online community a bad experience' as well though, as there are bad communities and good communities that have different characteristics.

That's a really good point Shyboy, would be interested to hear your thoughts on that? :)

I thought that too, ShyBoy - but then again a bad community would be the opposite of what I wrote?

Yea I guess there is an element of that.

I've noticed one thing bad communities have in common is a lack of moderation. Trolls will run them into the ground and good members will leave. But for good communities I said it was the regulars that made it awesome, the familiar names.

So they're not directly opposite but are interlinked.

A limitation of online support I've found is that you tend to get an amplification of common denominator advice rather than a breadth of different angles, whereas offline people seem to promote different ideas more than the mainstream ones.

I feel like the online medium is better for support and empathy and 'there there' - moral support - rather than digging deep and fixing problems like you might with offline support.

I don't know any online communities with 'expert contributors' really for support. Even on here where we have ask thesite and specialist chats, most of the advice is signposting or broad brush support.

Visordown and bit tech . net do actually have expert contributors but their focus is a lot narrower (motorbikes and computers respectively).

To put it another way, there isn't a lot of *fact* you can get on here that you can't get from other sources quite easily, but the USP here is the delivery of that information, it's a great supportive community. A lot of the time I expect people know the answers themselves anyway and are just looking for encouragement and support which isn't a bad thing.
