iPhone - deleting a contact

So I've deleted a contact on my phone, yet when I start to type his name into the 'To:' field on messages, he still appears? Any idea how to delete it completely?

    According to this you can't do it, it's just stupidity on Apple's side. The contact is deleted but the "recent contacts" entry isn't...
    One post says this though:
    I have this issue to but when the deleted numbers/addresses appears there is a blue arrow beside. I tap on this arrows and then tap on "delete from recent".
    If such an arrow appears it's worth trying. I don't have an iPhone so I can't tell.

    Sorry Indrid, realised I never replied to this to say thank you! Unfortunately a blue arrow didn't appear, but thanks for looking.
