Anthony Nolan register

Hey guys

Hope it's OK to make a thread about this :)

Have any of you heard of the Anthony Nolan charity? Or heard about donating blood stem cells?
For many people suffering from a blood cancer, such as leukaemia, a blood stem cell transplant may be their last chance of life.

I guess this is a bit of a personal plea. I have a friend who has a form of blood cancer, and although she had a lot of chemotherapy and entered remission last year, she's now in the position where she needs a transplant.

The Anthony Nolan trust has a register which links potential donors with recipients across the world. All you have to do to sign up to the register is spit into a tube! You can get a kit sent to you in the post, and send it back for free. Then you're on the register, and hopefully you could be a match for someone, somewhere, and then donate!

There's not much point me repeating stuff on the website, but please please take a look at the Anthony Nolan website.

Even if it's not something you're particularly interested in, please pass on the info to anyone who you think may be! Thanks for reading :)

I'll definitely join when I'm 16 if I can, just watched the video about donation and although it seems painful it's definitely worth while... it says you can't join if you have schizophrenia, I have psychosis but not schizophrenia so I'd have to check if I'd be allowed on the register.

I looked into donating baby's umbilical cord before and only a few hospitals seem to do it which is a bit lame.

I've thought about joining the register. Will ask the blood people if they can take an extra blood sample when I next donate blood.

I'm possibly a bit under the minimum weight, I'll have to weigh myself.

I'm not sure I can do it. I got told by someone at pain management class that anyone with an illness that the medical profession doesn't fully understand the cause of isn't allowed to donate blood, organs or anything else. :(

The problem as far as i know is not enough young men on the register, particularly BME and Asian young men.

 Men 18-30 are most likely to be asked to donate.

    I have just signed up.

If you are too old for the Anthony Nolan register (sob) you can still join the British Bone Marrow Registry up to the age of 49!

I will try to join when my postnatal ban has finished :)

I should really have updated this! My friend got a transplant through the register a few months ago from a German man :) This really does save lives....

That's wonderful to hear! How is your friend doing?

I will have to check if I can join this. I seem to hover around the minimum / just under the weight stuff.
