Menstruation, A Girl's First Step to Womanhood
About two years after a girl begins her growth spurt, she begins to
menstruate. Another name for this is the monthly period, or simply the
'period'. For about 3 to 7 days every month, a small amount of blood is
released from her vagina, which is a sign she is becoming physically
ready to have children.
This bleeding does not hurt and it does not mean that anything is wrong
with her; it is nature taking its course. The blood is actually the
thin, inner lining of the uterus. When a girl reaches the age of about
11 to 13, her body starts to ripen one egg each month and prepares a
blood-rich lining - a kind of nest for a baby to grow in. Without the
sperm, the egg cannot grow and the lining becomes old, so the body gets
rid of it through menstruation. About every 27 to 30 days, this process
starts all over again.

From that moment on and for the rest of her life, she is responsible
for all of her religious obligations just like any Muslim woman, such
as fasting, praying and covering herself properly in front of unrelated

About half of all girls and women experience some discomfort during
menstruation; they may have cramps, feel tired or be a little
irritable. God has excused women from fasting during Ramadhan on the
days that they are menstruating, but they must make up the missed days
of fasting when Ramadhan is over. Also, it is not permissible for
women to say their prayers, sit in a mosque or touch the Qur'an while
they are menstruating, because a person must be in a state of ritual
purity in order to do those things. The prayers do not need to be made
up later. When a woman has finished menstruating she takes a shower (or
bath -- must rinse the whole body with clean running water) in order to
purify herself for prayer. You may have noticed that your mother or
older sister does not join in the prayer for few days every month; this
is the reason why. You may also have wondered about those commercials
