Menstruation, A Girl's First Step to Womanhood
About two years after a girl begins her growth spurt, she begins to
menstruate. Another name for this is the monthly period, or simply the
'period'. For about 3 to 7 days every month, a small amount of blood is
released from her vagina, which is a sign she is becoming physically
ready to have children.

This bleeding does not hurt and it does not mean that anything is wrong
with her; it is nature taking its course. The blood is actually the
thin, inner lining of the uterus. When a girl reaches the age of about
11 to 13, her body starts to ripen one egg each month and prepares a
blood-rich lining - a kind of nest for a baby to grow in. Without the
sperm, the egg cannot grow and the lining becomes old, so the body gets
rid of it through menstruation. About every 27 to 30 days, this process
starts all over again.

The first time a girl menstruates is an important event in her life. It
means that she has reached puberty and is officially a young woman.
From that moment on and for the rest of her life, she is responsible
for all of her religious obligations just like any Muslim woman, such
as fasting, praying and covering herself properly in front of unrelated
men/strangers. She has taken her first step on the special path of
womanhood.

About half of all girls and women experience some discomfort during
menstruation; they may have cramps, feel tired or be a little
irritable. God has excused women from fasting during Ramadhan on the
days that they are menstruating, but they must make up the missed days
of fasting when Ramadhan is over. Also, it is not permissible for
women to say their prayers, sit in a mosque or touch the Qur'an while
they are menstruating, because a person must be in a state of ritual
purity in order to do those things. The prayers do not need to be made
up later. When a woman has finished menstruating she takes a shower (or
bath -- must rinse the whole body with clean running water) in order to
purify herself for prayer. You may have noticed that your mother or
older sister does not join in the prayer for few days every month; this
is the reason why. You may also have wondered about those commercials
on TV for feminine pads and tampons. These products are designed to
catch the blood from menstruation so that one's underwear and clothing

Boys become Men
Boys also have a physical sign to show that they have reached puberty
and become young men: sometimes when they are dreaming at night, their
penis becomes stiff and some sperm is released. This is called a wet
dream because the sperm live in a liquid called semen, and when it
comes out it dampens the underwear. This is not urine and it is nothing
to be ashamed of. It simply means that a boy is becoming physically
ready to be a father. From this point he's considered to be responsible
for his religious obligations, like every Muslim man. Some boys do not
experience wet dreams; they are considered to be young men by the age
of 15 according to Islamic Law, or when they have several other
physical signs of puberty such as the deepening of the voice. In any
case, boys (and girls) should regularly pray and fast from the age of
12, even if they are slow to develop the signs of puberty.

It is also possible for a boy's penis to become stiff during the day,
while he is awake. This is called an erection. Sometimes even little
boys get erections, but they do not make any sperm yet, so they cannot
have wet dreams. There is no harm in occasional erections which happen
by themselves, but a boy should avoid doing anything which causes him
to become sexually excited and have an erection - such as wearing tight
clothing which rubs him in that area, or looking at pictures of women
who are not properly dressed. A young person who has a wet dream or
notices some wetness after an erection must shower or take a bath (must
rinse body in clean running water afterwards) before he prays again,
touches the Qur'an or enters the mosque because the release of semen
makes a man unclean for worship.

Some boys and men touch their private parts on purpose in order to make
themselves have an erection and let some semen come out, because they
like the way it feels. This is called masturbation. Although this
behaviour is encouraged in some liberal societies, masturbation is
considered shameful and impure according to Islamic Law. It has no
benefit, and can be harmful to a person's physical, psychological and
spiritual health if it becomes a regular habit. Anyone who touches his
private parts must make a new ablution before praying, and anyone who
masturbates and lets semen come out must cleanse themselves by taking a

Actually one which is highly repressive in ideology and, to a greater degree, hypocritical in practice.

if you have the opportunity to see how the elites of Islamic nations live in relation to the more humble masses youll see practically every precept quoted by Aisha broken regularly whilst they are quick to publically punish or disgrace the powerless according to these selfsame principles.

When religion is the foundational buildingblock of civil society this is the kind of constraint and moral authoritarianism that arises.

Aisha - you should make shorter posts, and at least ask a question if you want to get a debate going. We already know about puberty on here!

Remember, those who wield the power in Islamic societies rarely adhere to its precepts.

Aisha, I really don't think it ir wrong to get enjoyment from the feelings you get from your own body such as in masturbation. As long as you are in the privicy of you own bedroon, learning all about the pleasurable feeling from the intimate parts of your body is wonderful thing that god has given us all and i think we all must thank god for that pleasure he has bought usl to enjoy
