Old cheque from HMRC

I recieved an old letter from a previous address which was from May, it had a cheque for £30 which will be too old to cash now and a brief paragrapgh saying i can expect montly payments.
It was weird as it never said why?
I have phoned HMRC, tax credits and income tax but nobody has a record of sending me a letter and now i cant find the letter :banghead:
Do you think the cheque itself will somehow have details on it they can trace or do you think without the letter ive lost out?

Well maybe call HMRC again and see if they can trace the cheque number in their admin system?
I don't think the cheque itself will have any information on it (unless hand written).
