Ouch, ouch, ouch...I have a bad case of shin splints :crying:

How can I get rid of them/ease them without resorting to cutting my own leg off?! :impissed:

icepacks, ibuprofen? I think you might just have to rest it out for a little while though.

What are your trainers like? Are they old? Are they cushioned enough?

If you do a good run or a good workout, its really beneficial to have a proteiny carby drink or light food within 30 minutes of finishing to repair muscle damage and make you less likely to get injured or sore.

That's the basis of what I'm doing - though mine keeps the same theory going to a half marathon.

    What's your program?

I have a book on running a marathon, for non-marathon runners.

It's this book, which uses intervals getting steeper as you go on, etc., which is the basis for C25K.

I was worried the book would be a bit basic / patronising, but it's actually really good.

Edited to add, one of the reviews on Amazon suggests the book you've bought as a better alternative!

I've stocked up on the Ibuprofen! My trainers are pretty decent Asics ones although I guess they could do with replacing soon'ish, is it every 200miles you are meant to replace them?! :chin:

If theyre not cushioned enough, you will get injuries running outside.
If I wear my old Mizunos, which are a good make, i can really tell the difference to when i wear my new ones. I can run better and further and more comfortably with my new ones. Theyre Kswiss tubes. I really recommend them

I might go for a run today, about 5k if I can get out the house.

My training plan focuses on time, not distance so until I mapped it out of interest this afternoon I didn't realise that I've long passed the 5km mark.

    :yippe:

Need to train, fast. Should I do interval training or is that bollocks?

That's what I'm doing and what most of the recommended programmes are based on.

There's an event in my village on Father's Day (19th June) in aid of the hospice that looked after my Grandad and I really want to do it but the choices are 3 miles or 7.

I've already passed the 3 mile mark in my training, but I'm nervous about getting to 7 miles in the next 9 weeks. My training plan seems to think I can do it, I'm tempted to go for it but my dad keeps telling me I won't be good enough because the Penn 7 is 'serious' runners and I'll look silly.

    What do you think?

I'd say go for it, it's a really good target to have for your training.

Realise you're not going to win, but that's really not the point.

Thanks all, I just needed a push :)

I'd be mortified if I came in last but I suppose it doesn't matter!

If you come in last, you'll have proved that you can run 7 miles. There's absolutely nothing mortifying about that.

    And I'll sponsor you.

    EUGH.

That is all I have to say.

I think once my mother's show is done with I am going to have to be a lot better about going out and doing running.

Is everyone doing the royal parks intending to run the whole thing? I think I might just do run/walk the whole way- that's the natural way I seem to want to run so...

i was hoping to run as much as possible tbh.
my latest route is 8.5k and i run pretty much all of it. It takes me roughly 45 minutes.

How long do you run and how long do you walk for?

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
do you eat before a run?

Ive found ive needed to up my protein intake in general since i started running, and before a run, i eat a banana or two and that gives me really good stamina to keep going. It really makes a difference to how long i can go for and my general comfort.
If i run on an empty stomach or having not eaten much in the day (not too much though) then i feel sick and faint and cant go for as long
