Ps3 connectivity issues

Basically, i'm having issues playing online over PSN. I can join public matches on games like CoD, but I can't join or host private matches. I can't play online on RDR either. My NAT type is 2, though it isn't in a DMZ yet because we can't remember the routers password/username.
Any thoughts on why it wouldn't be working?
