Can you refer to the dissertation itself?

In a normal essay its acceptable to write 'this essay will examine....' but writing 'this dissertation' seems a bit juvenile.

Is it still ok to write 'this dissertation'?

    i used the words 'project' and 'research' a lot. As in 'This project will show the similarities between x and z etc' and 'The research will give a clear indication how x reacts to z when etc etc'
