Kettlebells (strength training)

I have put my name down to start a kettlebell course in November.
I decided to do this because I have heard that kettlebells are amazing for burning fat and building strength. They look a bit like a cannonball with a handle.
Some people have told me however, that it's extremely painful afterwards, or that they're really difficult to work with... But I dunno if that person just wants to look hardcore as they have to use them for police training
However, I love using weights, even if I am still a beginner... I enjoy pushing myself and love feeling weak kneed after a work out. I hope I will enjoy it!
I was wondering how many people here have used them and what your experiences have been.

If you just toy with them, they are ok, but if you get the best out of them, they are very good.
can you use them like dumbbells?
You hold one with both hands and swing it up to head height, then let it drop again and repeat. See this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h1QcHTkwdI
Fellas should see this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy5uU7ku-Lo&feature=fvw
