Hi im trying to find out about welfare for a friend of mine who is from ireland but planning on moving uk in next few months.

She is a single mom with 2 kids and she needs to get away because of her ex, he is a junkie and keeps coming and wreaking her house and has hit her and the kids and police have not done anything so she has decided to try make a fresh start for herself and her children and get away.

Does anyone know what she would be able to cliam when she moves uk, or if she will be housed. She has always worked and is adament she will only need welfare help for a couple of months till she gets kids settled in schools etc and finds a job,
She is thinking of liverpool/manchester area's, but Wheshe has no idea how to welfare or who she should go to see when she gets there? what does she ask for? any advice would be great.

Thanks, cari

    Hi there,

It might be helpful for her to contact the councils directly. There's information on Liverpool here and Manchester here.

It might also be worth her contacting Womens' Aid as they may be able to offer her support and perhaps signpost her to places she can go for help in the cities where she wants to move to.

Sorry not to have more specific information but hopefully these signposts will help.

What does she claim now? She might be able to export the benefits she claims now.

Thanks for replys il pass info on,

She is currently on lone parent family payment, as she was made redundant from her job last month.
Her youngest is 2 1/2, oldest is 5.

She rang me in tears yesterday cos ex was after breaking in and smashing up her house, she cant prove it was him though so police wont do anything, but he admit it to her.. she said she just needs to get herself out of this situation asap. How long would it take to get a council house there, shes currently getting help with her rent off welfare here so not sure if there is a similar scheme in uk, anybody know?

    thanks in advance.

She needs to contact the local council. To find her council, she needs to go on to http://mycouncil.direct.gov.uk/index.html
