is this reasonable for graduation?

graduation is on 15 july, so hopefully it will be sunny!

is this ok do you think or too short? i know we'll be wearing robes so no one will see anyway but i'm going out for lunch after with my mum and my boyfriend so wanted to look nice. i just have nightmare visions of being 'THAT girl' if everyone is gonna be wearing pencil skirts or black dresses.

the only dress stipulation we have is:

Appropriate dress
The University requests that graduands dress appropriately for the formal occasion of their graduation - a shirt with a collar and tie and a suit or jacket and trousers for gentlemen, dress, skirt and smart top for ladies. Graduands are very welcome to wear national dress. The University does not permit the wearing of any form of fancy dress for congregation. Those who are not dressed appropriately will not be admitted to the degree congregation.

Please note that the Cathedral steps can be slippery so please wear sensible footwear.

People wore all sorts to mine, so I think you'll be fine!

Only thing is, our robes were mahoosive, so people in dresses who were on the petite side looked a little like they were naked underneath!

it is, but i dont really think maxi dresses are my style. i'd really short so would look a bit dumpy. but thanks for the suggestion

No i think you should wear someting colourful its a day to remember so wear something bold the yellow dress is really pretty but maybe just a touch to short and casual maybe ?

thanks i get the shortness, it would be perfect if it was just an inch lower! im really bad at understanding casual though, is it the sleeves or material maybe? hmm. im useless at this!

That's probably about how it would look on me (if that model put on about three stone, of course), but then I have legs to the bloody ceiling.

The first one is probably a bit too casual, the other two are nice. If you stick a pair of black tights on underneath, nobody will care.

Think the yellow dress in first post is nice but too bright, casual and short for a formal ceremony.. A black knee-length skirt with clear tights and heels looks good for girls. Thinking about my grad pics, trousers or a skirt with black tights didn't look appropriate, as when combined with long black robes, there's just too much black! What are your robe colours? Maybe wear a contrasting coloured, fitted shirt, eg. for pink robes (arts degrees) a pale blue shirt can look pretty. You're going to be immortalised on relatives' walls for years to come when the pics get handed out to family members, so go for a smart look! x

most people either wore dresses a bit like this or shirts etc, a friend of mine wore a strappless floral dress that was lush!!

If you can, I'd find out what your robes are going to be like before getting too hung up about things like length.

My robes were so giant on me that literally all you could see of my outfit was about 8 or so inches at the bottom of my legs. They totally closed at the front and covered everything but my trouser hems and a teeny bit of my neckline. If yours are like this I'd just get a dress you really like for after the ceremony, cause the gown will make sure you're decent for the formal bit! But if you have the smaller ones that do show the front of your outfit, then you can worry about being less casual.

Should be fine, it depends what you're happy in. Your robes don't cover everything and if you're on a platform people will have a pretty good view from the front row. It's difficult to know when you're not able to try it on.
