M.I.A. Gets a video banned from Youtube

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I've just watched the video for Born Free, which the Metro are up in arms about (disclaimer: I would sooner wipe my arse with the Metro than believe a word of it, but people were talking about it in work).

The plot of the video (which I don't know if I should post up on these messageboards, due to its violence) is where red heads are rounded up and taken away in a bus, then forced to run through a minefield or gunned down. It's easy to see why the video is so controversial, as the violence is extremely graphic.

I was wondering what those people who have seen the video think of it.

I find it hard hitting (especially where a child is shot in the head), but then this is the reality for millions of people and a kind of reality which the artist has some experience of too.

Whilst we often applaud violence for the sake of violence (for example, the popularity of films such as the Saw series), a video with such deep political meaning is seen to be shocking...

What do others think?

Is this the video that people are talking about "gingers being blown up"? I haven't watched it.

If the video was that violent, you can always mark it as inappropriate (using one of the buttons on Youtube), and then the video will ask for age verification in future. The mechnism has been in place for a few years.

I thought it was very clever, showing racism for absurd it really is.

I liked the first half, in the second half it becomes a little gratuitous and starts missing the central point - to put it in simple terms I felt sympathy and started almost getting pangs of tears when they were all on the bus, but the field was just too unreal and I felt like I was watching just any other action / horror film (bored).

Compare this to the deep and even long lasting impact some films can have when broaching the topic (Schindler's list, the Pianist, children of men [to an extent]), I felt the way it was implemented let it down.

It shouldn't be censored though, I found it on YouTube, just here:

I watched it expecting to be moaning about the decision. And then a naked couple came on the screen, and I'm pretty sure it's youtube policy not to allow nudity. It's a stupid policy, but it's consistent, and I'm not sure that the violence in the video is what got it to be pulled, since it's obviously not particularly violent compared to plenty of other things.

I watched it before. I didn't really pay any attention to the song. Couldn't understand a single word she said. I had to go read the lyrics. Then when reading the lyrics and watching the video - I don't see the point she was trying to make. Bad taste in my eyes. Not the end of the world she got it pulled from YouTube. Loads do every day.

Yes, several years ago the US government decided that being ginger in the USA was to be made a felony. There was an amnesty at first, where Gingers could goto central processing facilities. Once there they were given a choice of their head being shaved, dyed or wearing a wig.

Those who didn't go are currently being rounded up.

Until now it's been an urban legend, but obviously this video has just emerged.

It's not that daft to be honest, they didn't want to be inundated with porn spammers

Yeah, thank god that doesn't happen on youtube. :chin: Well yeah, I get why they do it. It's easier to just say no nudity than make a judgement on it all. But it's still a sign of some pretty fucked up logic that has no problem with graphic violence or extreme racism, both of which are reasonably common on Youtube, yet has a complete blanket ban on someone possibly seeing a female nipple, even in the "not suitable for minors" section. That would corrupt our children, after all.

agree with IWS on the policy, it should be taken on a context basis

then again youtube is american-based and you know what americans are like, get excited over a bit of leg these days.

dont tell them they all come out of a vagina when they're born though, they'll freak out and demand mexicans be deported or something.

It's a political video, probably about how ridiculous ethnic cleansing is...

The artist is apparently very outspoken about Sri Lanka and human rights.
