Legal status of Royal Mail delivery

Bit rusty on my law, but seem to remember something I was taught at university along the lines that saying you didn't receive a "notice to quit", or similar document is no defence. I seem to remember something like, once a letter is posted it is deemed to have arrived. Is this correct?

    I think that's correct, though there ought to be proof of posting at the other end.
