Turning bling bling into cash

I had a big tidy-out in the house today and I found a pot of jewellery weighing about half a kilo. I don't think there are any diamonds in there but there are a lot of crystals. A Repton / Baulderdash player's dream! I don't want to sell it on eBay because without relevant knowledge, my vague description will attract unrealistic bids.

What is the name of a shop where you can trade in jewellery for money? I did know what it was at one stage but forgotten now. Could be a pawnbroker, a stockbroker? Or even a jewellery shop could do it?

Thanks.

Ha, I loved repton - all jewelers and gold merchants should be able to evaluate what you've got for sale. My advice would be to put some time aside and phone around a number of people in your local area.

Don't agree to anything with a time limit on it or someone who makes you an offer that they say they will take back. And get the value written down if you can.

Most mass-pawnbrokers like cash converters would sell on anything specialist or really valuable to an actual jeweller rather than displaying it in shop - they tend to be the lowest common denominator for items like this.

So head to places that might be able to properly judge what you are selling, then as a last resort see what price cash converters, etc, will give you - then go to the best place.

Watch for anything where the price really varies as well - it may be a sign a few people are undervaluing something worth a bit and that's probably worth looking into more carefully.

And whatever you do, don't get desperate when selling, promise yourself you don't need to sell it on the day - that way you won't be tempted to agree to a disappointing offer out of frustration.

Thanks a lot Jim! I've had the jewellery for most of my life and just remembered that I still had it. I won't be in a rush to sell the items, and because they got passed through family, I'll need to check if it's okay to do it. I also need to find out which family members they were from lol!
