Wasnt sure if this was the right section but yknow, here goes.
I passed my driving test today
Only problem now is that my extremely good mood has received a kick in the teeth from insurance companies. I don't have a car yet so Ive been trying to find a car and insurance company that is relatively cheap together, im not too bothered what im driving, as long as it gets me from A to B.
I was looking at Citroen AX's or Peugeot 106's all pretty old (Early 1990's) and the insurance quotes are STILL coming out just under £2000 when the cars are only £300 to buy!
Seriously, seriously need some advice. Please
p.s. im just looking at third party fire and theft

You tried "Confused" or "Compare the market"?
The price of the insurance might be steep in relation to your car, but it's to protect other drivers from you.
Thanks
Oh yeah, one thing I forgot to suggest is, have you thought about adding a parent or going on their insurance first?
My first insurance was under my dad - he owned and insured the car with Kwik Fit, and I think I paid him.
The second year he transferred it to me (ownership and insurance) and I took off from there.
No, you never said and then ... yeah
But it's bookmarked now Just hope I remember it's there in September! >.<
Getting old is great. But until then, you'll be rodgered with insurance. When I was getting quotes as a youngster, it made ~£50 per year difference whether I had a Mini 850cc or an Orion 1.6i Ghia.
Yeah i have noticed that, direct line in particular REDUCE the cost by about £200 when you go fully comp with legal protection!
Yeah i had a feeling people would say this. The cheapest ive found on a car so far was £1500 from direct line, ugh. Looks like i may be forking out a lot more than i wanted to.
Just filled in my details for them and they said they would get in touch within 72 hours, thanks!
Anyways im off to bed now, shall let you know how my insurance battle goes on.
Extra tips:
Putting a parent as another named driver seems to help the cost as pointed out in here somewhere.
Quotes with Direct Line are coming out cheaper because my mum is already with them and you get a multi-policy bonus.
It costs me £1000 to insure a 97 Nissan Micra Third Party Only.
It costs me £1300 to insure a 00 BMW 3 Series Fully Comp :shocking:
If you're going to get insurance it might be worth you signing up to Quidco; GWST got #120 cashback when we took out our insurance and you get #2 just for getting a quote from Compare the Market.
Just to add that if you are just a named driver on your parents' policy they might not pay out if you crash. By being a named driver you're saying that they are the main driver of your car and that's a lie if they never drive it. You're almost certainly not going tobe covered if youmove away to university as a named driver.
Who's that quote with?
Although it HAS just occured to me that your 21, but still, maybe the company will still be a tiny bit cheaper than the £1515.15 that ive managed to get to now
helps being 25 thou i guess!
Also, being a bloke doesn't help. Ridiculously enough, I'm 29, have 7 or 8 years NCB but putting my girlfriend on my insurance dropped it by 20%. Now the ridiculous bit:
She has never owned or been insured on a car whilst living in the UK. It's been 5 years now. Utterly arse-bags.
Moneysavingexpert is brilliant
My Dad got back £70 for using Quidco - also adding your parents as named drivers can reduce the cost of insurance sometimes.
Basically im looking at a Fiat Cinquecento now, insured fully comp, with direct line @ £1300
I think i may finally have got it as low as im gonna get it haha

Me and my bf share the same car atm and I am insured on his insurance. He only passed a few months before me but becuase he is 26 his insurance was about £500-£600 whereas just for me it was about £1200 (I'm only 21). But to add me to his insurance only cost £130 for 6 months.
I'm looking for my own car now I can afford it and after having 1 years no claims my insurance will be about £750 (for a ford fiesta zetec 06 plate) but for some stupid reason me changing my job to staff nurse put it up
If you can try and get on one of your parents it will be alot cheaper than just on your own!
I pay £1300 a year for an 06 3 Series, that's only with 1 years NCB!! How old are you?
[EDIT]
Ah, passed at Christmas. That'll do it
im 23 and live in manchester city centre. im looking at buying a ford ka or something similar (for cheap insurance!). i dont have any no claims discount and i only passed my test last year.
ive managed to get my lowest quote to £400 and thats with a total excess of £100 which is really good.
i work for an insurance firm though and have played about with my quotes a bit.
to reduce your premium, add your parents as additional drivers even if they wont actually drive your car. its knocked about £350 off mine adding my dad. ive also added my boyfriend which has reduced it further. increasing your voluntary excess will reduce your premium too but be careful with this because there may be a compulsory excess (depending on what car you will be driving) and because of your age, they'll probably be a driver specific excess too so if you have an accident and you want to make a claim, you could be looking at paying out quite a bit!
also, lie about your mileage. unless you specifically use your car to commute to work/college everyday, lie your arse off because it increases the cost so much as the more you travel, the bigger the risk you are. it rarely gets checked so i really would lie about that one.
if i was you, i'd get your parents to set up a policy for you and get you on as an additional driver. it would be SO much cheaper.
It would also be technically fraudulent, and restrict you from generating your own no claims bonus, which is where the real savings are in the long term.
I agree with the rest of your comments though.
that is true but theres no way of proving it. people do it all the time and theres nothing insurance firms can actually do. its ridiculously easy to get away with. i personally wouldn't do it myself but i know ALOT people who have.
as for building up your own no claims bonus as an additional driver, it is actually possible. most firms don't do it but there are firms that do. you just have to search for them.
ncd doesn't always mean a cheaper policy either. its a bit rubbish. ive got so many customers giving me shit at the moment because even though they've got another years ncd, the price of their policy has increased generally, it does reduce your premium but mmm :impissed:
urgh. all this insurance talk.
Direct Line do this as far as I am aware...
yeah, there are some firms that do
Based on fullycomp and including legal cover and £300compalsary excess and £250 volentary excess
This past year I payed £1200-£1300 on an 03plate Yaris
Renewal quote from current insurance £850 (never take your renewal)
Cheapeast quote online with search engines (confused, gocompare and moneysupermarket) £650.00
phoned sainsbury car insurance and some others, Sainsbury cheapests £550
Crowthorne (a broker) £499.00 inc legal cover excess of £250 in total
Try them out

Always call them as they do NOT do online discounts and online is not an imediate quote, over the phone is,
num - 0870 7702933
however i got the local number for the same line 01344 771626
(use the cheaper one as it is the same line/same people)
