i teach english to foreign teenagers and we want to watch a few films - the trouble is, they have to have at least some 'interesting' or 'educational' content.
for instance, we watched 'this is england' because it deals with right-wing extremism in england and touches on the falklands war, the thatcher government, the influence strong characters have on weaker ones etc etc
any suggestions? the kids are 16-18 years old, so nothing overtly sexual or violent
i'd also like a film for 12-14 year olds, but we've already seen 'billy elliott'
would be grateful for suggestions. i am thinking about 'football factory' as one.

What kind of educational stuff do you want?
There's tons of historical films out there.
football factory deals a lot with an issue which is a british stereotype. ok, the language is bad, but you could say that about 'this is england' and 'trainspotting' which have both been shown in schools.
Id be really pissed off if my son watched trainspotting at school
I would of thought maybe a film set back in the day, when they actually spoke proper english would be useful. Not all this "fuck off you cunt" malarky
Though i'm useless when it comes to olden day films.
My Left Foot
Bend It Like Beckham
My Summer Of Love
Last Resort
Has it got to be a British film? And are you after something that's going to teach English listening, or something that will teach about British culture?
Brassed Off
Bend it like Beckham
For the older group (though plenty could be watched by the 12-14 year olds, just not certain if they'd be bored) -
This Sporting Life
Nil by Mouth
Adulthood/Kidulthood
Saturday Night/Sunday Morning
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
Raining Stones
High Hopes
Meantime
Scum
The Likely Lads
Dead Man's Shoes (which outside of just being very good, I still think is the single bast example of modern working class life outside of London anyone has filmed - though ain't exactly cheery, but then you've already shown This is England )
Time and the City
I Mike Leigh.
Maybe Nuts in May
Sod it - lets have some Mike Leigh youtubage -

for the older kids, they're 17/18 anyway so it's all good and legal here providing its not porn. i'm not gonna show anything that has a certificate higher than their ages. if the parents are pissed off they can always write a letter which no one will read.
i hadn't thought of adulthood/kidulthood. good shouts.
