Sick jokes and faux outrage from politicians

Following the crocodile tears and shameless opportunism from MPs across the floor during the Ross-Brand phone call 'scandal', once again we have a government minister speak out publicly against a distasteful/sick/naughty (delete as appropriate) joke by a comedian. This time it was a joke by Alan Carr about Karen Matthews.

What the fuck is going on here??? Are we regressing into collective childhood and idiocy? Can the country no longer take a sick joke without people being fucking traumatised or government ministers feeling the need to condemn it?

FUCK OFF YOU CUNTS!!

ffs
Beep boop. I'm a bot.

But isn't that what ministers always seem to do ? Point the finger at something else so you're diverted from how they're fucking everything up.

Shahid Malik is the sort of MP who would feel the need to announce to the world that he was about to take a shit. He absolutely loves the sound of his own voice. Like almost every other member of parliament, he should be forced to undergo "shut the fuck up" training.

The jokes in question were in dubious taste, but I did consider them quite funny. More Karen Matthews related jokes from this brilliant comedian, please.

I do wonder how they pick jokes to be offended by. There's far more offensive comedy out there, some of it even broadcast quite willingly by the BBC :p

Clearly you have absolutely no idea about Shahid Malik's work within local politics. Despite being a Labour MP (who I am against) the work he has done for the areas he serves in commendable.

If you thought that joke was bad, take a look at this mock-up, which was sent to me by an acquaintance. Utterly tasteless.

Do not click this if you're easily offended. Don't say you weren't warned.

Because I'm attempting to say that there are far worse jokes and anecdotes doing the rounds at the moment. What Carr said was pretty tame compared to that.

Politicians take more and more of our liberties away while screaming to be exempt themselves.
The police can raid my home and my place of work more than ever before on less and less evidence.
So fuck the politicians ...not even bright enough to say ...you got a warrant mate?

I just about pissed myself at this. It might be in bad taste, but the best jokes usually are.

Everyone has their own standards imo, I think I enjoy humour that is quite 'sick' or wrong because it pushes the boat out. You can't beat a good beastiality joke.

Until we start making racist or homophobic jokes, then they don't become so funny and just become sick and disgusting

That is just stupid. I don't get why you posted it either..

I understand that there should be a certain amount of control as to what gets aired on tv but sometimes I just think the viewing public should be allowed to make up their own minds as to whether something is funny or not. As for what Alan Carr said, I'm not deeply offended by it. I just think it is a very weak joke on his part. I guess making fun of working class people must be in at the moment.

A tad unrelated but has anyone seen the recent ad campaign that features the slogan 'we're closing in on you'. I think it's for benefits? I honestly thought it was a piss take at first. It's so ridiculous.

People lost their jobs at social services because the mock up contained the face of an actual abused child, not because it was tasteless. That's what I heard, anyway.

I hadn't heard that. All I saw from a report in the Daily Heil was complaints about the "sick" image of Glitter buying a child at the duty free shop. And the image was emailed by social workers. Oh the horror!

The reason I posted this picture was to prove that there are far worse jokes about the Karen Matthews case doing the rounds at the moment. I could have done the same thing when the Prophet Mohammed row was going on last year - except I'd probably have some nutter with a beard issuing a fatwa against me if I did. :p Doubtless though, that there are even more extreme virals going around right now.
As for what Alan Carr said, I'm not deeply offended by it. I just think it is a very weak joke on his part. I guess making fun of working class people must be in at the moment.
What a ludicruous statement. But I'm not surprised - I half expected someone to attempt to make this into a class issue. This article from some mad harridan at The Observer appeared at the weekend - not very bright, are they? Let's have a look at Alan Carr's background. Unless I'm mistaken, he grew up in Northampton. His dad was the manager of a local football club. He is university educated and gained a degree from Middlesex Unversity. After this, he went on to do all kinds of work in the media, not just comedy. I struggle to see how he's a snob because of this...

As for this idea people only take the piss out of Karen Matthews because of class, this is utter bullshit. They take the mick out of her because she someone who swindled the benefits system, having kids from countless different dads - how exactly a munter like her got anyone into bed remains unknown. If someone is prepared to commit a massive crime like she has, they deserve all they get, no matter who they are in society.

Of course, were Karen Matthews to be a millionaire who had her own mansion and butler, I'm sure third-rate left-wing columnists wouldn't be making jokes at her expense, would they? Oh look, I see a flying pig...

Sadly, I have seen it. It's exactly what I expected from the morons running this country. The Beeb has equally threatening adverts telling you to pay the licence fee or else. Bastards, the lot of them.

To be fair Alan Carr's joke was about her class - he was saying he really wanted to do a show about working class slappers not rich birds but they couldn't find anyone - 'I guess Karen Matthews was busy' - followed by the gay icon references. So, ya know, would be nice not to start calling other people's peoples views ludicrous just for differing from yours.

Not saying class is a big part of it, but the joke was directly about her perceived roughness and in a roundabout way, class.

Though that's a tangential issue really - though you could argue that part of judging how tasteless a joke is can be measured, by how able people are to respond to it. Especially where culture, class, race, etc, starts to come into play.

Nonsense! The joke was made because it was funny and controversial. A comedian's sole job is to make people laugh, not worry about whether some self-appointed loudmouth such as Shahid Malik will find it offensive. Class has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Besides, there are countless people who've been convicted of crimes and ended up being the target of comedians or online jokes - they definitely weren't all "working class". Gary Glitter made millions from his music, and he's not above being targeted by humourists. It wouldn't surprise me if there were jokes about the likes of Ian Huntley doing the rounds a few years ago either.

Incidentally, what is working class about Karen Matthews? She never had a job in her life and milked the benefits system for all it was worth. I think that anyone who considers themselves working-class would be insulted to hear these champagne socialist Guardianistas tarnishing their name like that. Karen Matthews was is part of the growing under-class in this country.

I think there are plenty of definitions for what it means to be 'working class' and one of those is family background. Maybe I should have made it clear but I was referring to the pitiful 'joke' you posted.

How could anybody know that from that pic though? :s

Flashman - racist and homophobic jokes are extremely funny when used in an ironic sense. There's nothing I love more than seeing people go white with outrage at jokes, not realising that they're the butt of it.

No but you continued to post it when apparently you found it 'utterly tasteless'. I realise that people have different types of humour but I find it pretty depressing that people are so ready to laugh at other's misfortunes. As for Alan Carr, cheap shot is all I'm saying.

So why not in a non-ironic sense?
