Course Essay, Variation within biological groups?

Right im in pretty desperate need of help. I've got a course essay due (1500 words) and its got to be on "the origin and diversity of a named taxonomic group" but im totally stumped as to what group to look at. I need a small enough group that i can probably look at in 1500 words, but also a group with quite a lot of diversity, to make a fairly interesting essay

So what im looking for is suggestions of a fairly interesting fairly diverse group probably looking at a family/small order to fit into the word count

Anyone got any suggestions?

Marsupials? I think the way they evolved in a convergant manner with mammals to fill similar niches in isolation is
is quite interesting. There must be so many examples of this though!
