Eb's has the magic gone thread got me thinking about what football is to me. So - in true Ron Manager style - here's my list...

The Liverpool team of the late 70s/early 80s

Brian Clough’s football philosophy “if God had meant football to be played in the air, he’d have put grass in th esky”

Eric Cantona’s volley vs. Wimbledon at Selhurst Park

Eric Cantona’s volley vs. Palace Fan also Selhurst Park

English domination of Europe until Heysel

Kevin Keegan’s mid 70s Perm

Luton beating Arsenal in the League Cup Final

Motty’s Sheepskin

Crap Scottish goalkeepers (Alan Rough anyone?)

The Hand of God

Maradona’s second goal vs. England, Mexico 1986

San Marino 1 England 0 (after 7 seconds)

Bryan Robson scoring after 27 seconds vs. France, Spain World Cup 1982

Don Howe’s hat

David Pleat dancing across the pitch after avoiding relegation with Luton

Cameroon 1 Argentina 0, Italy 1990

David Platt’s last goal in the last minute of extra time vs Belguim, Italy 1990

Ron Greenwood’s tracksuit

Last five minutes of Champions League Final, in Barcelona, May 1999

The Champions League when it was the European Champions Cup

Match of the Day with Jimmy Hill

The Big Match on a Sunday afternoon

Gazza’s knee (see also ankle, elbow, drinking problem, wife beating, fuck off norway, daft as a brush, tears in Italy, tantrums before France 98 etc etc etc)

Gazza’s miss vs. Germany, European Championships 1996

Gazza's goal vs. Scotland, same tournament

Wembley 1966 when England rules the world

Wembley 1968 when United ruled Europe (first English team to do so)

Scotland never reaching the second round of the World Cup

Germany 1 England 5 (need I say more?)

Thats what mid-table does to you at this stage of the season.

Mok, you forgot Jimmy Glass scoring for Carlisle Vs Plymouth, May '99. Surely the best relegation dogfight of all time?

Football isn't all bad at the mo. Well not if you support Burton Albion. Top of the league, a full 16 points clear and in the Semi-final of the FA Trophy!

These are worring times, ITV Digital, need I say more.

Proof positive that football is still exciting, what about Cardiff vs Leeds this year (if you ignore that morons)...

and I missed out the personal stuff...like getting home from school with holes in the knees of my trousers from slide tackles on the playground, running to my bedroom getting changed and running out to play football with my mates until it got dark...

22-a-side, eighteen-all and the next goal wins...

The first goal for my primary school (yes I can still remember it..)

The best goal I ever scored (from a corner...)

My first secondary school goal, a cheeky lob

The first time I captained the school team

    Subbuteo

The excitement of your first match...

Do you remember where you were when Pearce scored his penalty against Spain in Euro 96?

I don't think that there is much wrong with 'football', its just the 'business' side which pisses me off....tha game is just as good as ever...

On a bed at my mates house, jumping up and down.

    Greatest moments:

Mcmanamans goal for Liverpool vs Celtic in UEFA Cup - i think

Beckhams opening game of the season goal against Wimbledon

Nayim (sp?) vs Arsenal in the last minute of extra time (very vivid memory). Zaragoza was it?

Jay Jay Okocha - Nigerian number 10 - Nigeria vs Denmark - France 98 - What a player! Still rate him as one of the best in the world

    England 5 Germany 1

    England 4 Holland 1

    Every Vinnie Jones 50-50 tackle

Shearer header. England vs Germany - Euro 96 Semi Final

Three Lions sung by the whole of Wembley stadium - and the anthem

Roberto Carlos free kick. France vs Brazil. Le Tournoi 1997

Countless Beckham free kicks. Columbia. Greece. Even a few for Utd.

A Beckham free kick of my own. Bewdley Town vs Mostyn Rangers. October 2001.

    That'll do for now.

    1. Charlton beating Sunderland in the 1998 Wembley play-off final. 4-4 after extra time with the mighty Londoners winning 7-6 on penalties. It doesn't get much better than that (and the fact that we went down the following season is neither here nor there).

    2. And then there's New Zealnd's one and only visit to the World Cup Finals in 1982.
Needing to win by a clear five goals against Saudi Arabia to make it through to the final qualification play-off, NZ went to Riyadh... and won 5-0. A 2-1 win against China in Singapore and the miracle was complete. It will never happen again with those bastard Australians always in the way.

Terrible run of injuries and in February was finally forced to retire after a two-year fight against a hip injury. Will always be a legend in SE7.

Yeah but it didn't stop you from going down the next season

I remember away fans (can't remember which ones) singing 'Down with the Forest, you're going down with the Forest' at us near the end of that season. And they were right.

Which you can't now from the Valley. The magnificant new North Stand extension means the old view from the East Stand straight out to the Dome has been rplaced with thousands of new seats. Much more pleasent.
