May 1st Elections

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Who do you reckon you're gonna vote for?

And just a quick question. How come in the same election last year, only 1 seat was up for grabs in my area, and now it's 3 seats? What's the difference between the two elections?

Was there a bi-election in between?

There was an election on the 3rd May last year. My council's website doesn't seem to draw any distinction between them, and the four that ran last time are running again, but they're joined by 7 more.

Conservatives because in my ward they are the only party who have a hope of beating the residents association and my main desire is that it's not them.

Probably Lib Dems as first choice then Ken and second, though if it gets really close between Ken and Boris I'll vote for Ken as my first choice.

Either Ken or the Lib Dems will do a moderate job, if Ken could just learn to shut up he'd be a decent mayor I'm concerned the Torries will bugger everything up.

If it was Singe Transferable Vote (instead of Supplementary Vote) I think Brian Paddick would have a better chance.

With SV - what will be used, if any candidate gets over half the vote outright in first preference votes, they win. If no candidate gets that, the two with the most first preference votes go through to a second round. At the second round the second pref votes of those eliminated candidates are carried over. So if you vote LibDem/Green/independent/etc first and Ken second, your second pref most likely will be carried over as it'll be Ken/Boris in the second round.

i'm going paddick 1st, and ken 2nd myself

and assembly i'll vote so someone new gets the job in my area since they don't do anything anyway in the assembly since they need a 2/3 majority to override the mayor

If Boris weren't such a plank, it would be a clear cut choice.

I *have* to be rid of that nasty little man Ken, though.

There's a bloke running near me who's like the Iranian version of Aladdin, running for the Socialist People's Party (local party of pissed off ex-Labour voters). I was thinking of voting for him. Otherwise I've got a choice between Labour, Conservatives and the BNP. :yeees: The BNP running it's usual "foreigners taking our jobs" in a town with about 3 foreign people in it.

We're having local elections and yet again we get nothing through the door about it.

Are you accusing Aladdin of anti-semitism?
    (PS- Lib dems not running?)
Nope. Probably the party most likely to get my vote too.

I think Labour will have it in the bag, and the Conservatives will be a close second (though when each party has more than one candidate, I don't get who you're supposed to pick). I also expect the Socialist candidate to do well though, because he's pretty vocal about local issues and gets more media coverage than anyone else. But I think keeping the BNP out is more important than who gets in, so I think I'll probably vote for whoever I think will come 3rd.

It's a bit difficult to register a vote when you barely know anything about the people standing for election, and their beliefs. Despite reading the local newspapers, I'm not able to find anything new being promised by any candidates. They seem an incredibly bland bunch, truth be told.

No - but I am accusing the Socialist People's Party of being so

Based on what? Their website has some stuff about our local reservoir, and some houses being demolished in town. It's not a national party, if you're thinking it's part of the Socialist Party.

    Boris for Mayor!

I feel the same way about Boris as I do about George Bush. I don't want him to win, but at least there'll be a silver lining of entertaining TV news for a while. Plus I don't live there, so he can't fuck my life up too much.

If he gets rid of bendy buses, that will be a good thing for me.

I want him in more because I want Ken out. Having started out so well, recent events with his campaign people siphoning off our hard-earned left right and centre to line their own pockets combined with the Tube strike planned for 8 days time (which is really going to fuck up my plans) means that Boris gets my vote.

I don't drive (though I can) so I don't really give a stuff about congestion charge/car policies but I do like old BJ's policies on London's green spaces, keeping those toerag chavs on buses quiet and (fingers crossed) air-conditioned tubes, which, as I have to travel them every day, would be a godsend.

What is peoples problem with bendy buses, I ride them all the time, they are really no different to normal ones.

As for Boris waving a magic wand and getting kids to be quiet or an air conditioned Tube - he has exactly the same level of ability to do that as Ken - none.

I agree, I dont see what the fuss is with bendy buses. They have got to be better than those clapped out double deckers.

Man, I love the air-con on the tube arguement. Far as I'm aware they've already spent nearly £150 million over the last couple of years just trying to figure out how on earth it could be possible to cool the fully underground lines down. It just looks like a basic impossibility regardless of how much people want it.

To be honest I reckon it'd be better to simply increase the free water programme during very hot days.

I find that the bendy buses get abused a lot, they are referred to by my friends and I as "free buses". Imagine the amount of income that would be generated if people actually paid to get on them?

EDIT: And I think one caught fire in Germany and Crawley.... at least that's what I remember.

There are quite often spot checks, if they happened more often then people would pay. Phasing them out and replacing them with new Routemasters like Boris wants would cost a fortune.

Much more dangerous though (as well as taking up more room increasing congestion)
