No, he wasn't doing it to be condenscending or anything like that. It's just the way he talked. I think he was originally from East London, so you were more likely to hear him saying "love" than "babe", but he could get away with it. If someone with a more formal manner of sppech such as myself started referring to people here as "babe", there would soon be a warrant out for my arrest. Must admit it was something of a thrill for me sometimes. There was nothing I loved more than seeing someone come into the shop who I really hated. I'd usually have asked them for ID before they'd even reached the alcohol.
Mind you, if you think that's bad, you should consider the bureaucracy. Trading standards insisted that we keep a log on these events. Every time I refused to serve a customer, I had to write in this log, providing certain details. You can tell the form was produced by someone who's never worked in a shop - it asked for the customer who'd been refused service to provide their name and signature. :eek2:
I've never Id'd someone, cant actually wait haha
I only get the 30+ for some reason.
I think I'd have been more offended at being called "babe" than anything else.
Exactly. And I don't really want to pay £72 (for a passport - not allowed to drive and some places only accept driving licence or passport) just to get served - especially when it's only for something like orange & lemonade.
I cant stand that either. One of my pet hates is someone calling me anysort of pet name wothout knowing me.
Yeah i guess, but the cashier isn't really gonna care if they lose a few quid, they'll be more bothered about getting in trouble for serving an underage person.
To me it should be clear policy: Either
1. it doesn't matter if the person handing over the cash has ID, EVERY individual there under 21 should be asked for ID and if there are parties under 18 then the customer should be refused service, or
2. The focus should just be on the person you're actually serving unless you have VERY good reason to believe they're intending to supply it to someone else (and this doesn't include just having someone else standing next to them).
There is no indication on the Think 21 signs that the former is the policy and I've never heard that in order to be served alcohol everyone present has to be 18 and you therefore can't buy alcohol if, for example, you have your child with you. Would be the same as saying adults in pubs that allow under 18s aren't allowed to buy themselves any alcohol at all.
Totally. I lost my last passport by taking it out on the piss with me, now if they wont accept a combination of student ID and provisional license (although Edinburgh isnt too bad for that) I'm screwed.
Its apparently because if you sent of for your provisional when your 17 and put a date on the form that actually says your 18 they don't bother following it up and verifying your exact age.
When you apply for your full pink licence they do full checks and therefore would know your exact age.
Bet you love the uniform .. i certainly did ...
you miserable cunt
On fake IDs... the best one ever.
I walked into the village co-op. I bought a cake, a packet of candles, and a box of matches. She asked for ID (I was wearing my leathers, lol) as matches are an age restricted product. Fair enough. Hand over driving licence. She rings the bell. Apparently, there's been a spate of fake IDs recently. So I stand there patiently and smile sweetly, a bit shocked (she was being polite at least), her manager comes over and checks it... for about 1 minute! (which is quite long if you think about it)
Then it was all ok. When I used to work in a shop, maybe I'm 'bad' but I used to generally use my discretion. If two 20ish olds were buying loads of groceries and a bottle of wine - no biggy. If someone who I thought was about the same age was getting 6 bottles of lambrini then see if they've got ID. It's a thing called common sense.
