Mind you, your boss sounds a bit egotistical. Maybe it's just me but I can't stand people who call women 'babe' (without knowing them - it's just... *argh*)
Previous boss, ShyBoy, previous boss... ;)

No, he wasn't doing it to be condenscending or anything like that. It's just the way he talked. I think he was originally from East London, so you were more likely to hear him saying "love" than "babe", but he could get away with it. If someone with a more formal manner of sppech such as myself started referring to people here as "babe", there would soon be a warrant out for my arrest.
I've been IDd a fair few times and normally people are very polite about it, apologetic almost like they trust you but have to. But you get the rare cunt who seems to enjoy exerting that tiny bit of power.
Must admit it was something of a thrill for me sometimes. There was nothing I loved more than seeing someone come into the shop who I really hated. I'd usually have asked them for ID before they'd even reached the alcohol. :p

One of my friends who worked in a shop knew this lad who was in her class, but he was quite horrid to all of us, so she refused to serve him because he didn't have ID even though she knew for a fact he was 20. Lol.

Done it several times myself. They usually just come back a few minutes later with their parents.

Mind you, if you think that's bad, you should consider the bureaucracy. Trading standards insisted that we keep a log on these events. Every time I refused to serve a customer, I had to write in this log, providing certain details. You can tell the form was produced by someone who's never worked in a shop - it asked for the customer who'd been refused service to provide their name and signature. :eek2:

I work in a supermarket and because I know most of the little chavs (only from seeing them about so often I dont associate with them :eek2: ) that attempt to come in and buy alcohol they never come to my till. Get ID'd anyways like so most of the time they try to nick it.

I've never Id'd someone, cant actually wait haha
I only get the 30+ for some reason.

Sounds stupid beyond belief, but when retailers face losing their licences and poorly-paid shop/bar staff could face huge fines or prison for underage sales, an increasingly commonplace event. Oh god yes. The managers at that shop used to breathe down my neck every time someone came in wanting to buy alcohol. One day, I was on the till and the shop manager was behind me, filling up the cigarette stand. Someone comes to the till wanting to buy some behind the counter vodka. I was about to serve her when the boss turns round and says "you got any ID, babe?". As it happens, she did - she was 21. I got a bollocking afterwards for not asking.

I think I'd have been more offended at being called "babe" than anything else.

plus not all people have drivers licenses and want to carry their passports on them. And generally not all people have ID.

Exactly. And I don't really want to pay £72 (for a passport - not allowed to drive and some places only accept driving licence or passport) just to get served - especially when it's only for something like orange & lemonade.

Asda's is quite weird, they say 'have you got ID' you say 'Yes' and they dont ask to see it or anything, just swipe it through. Bobs your uncle etc etc.

I cant stand that either. One of my pet hates is someone calling me anysort of pet name wothout knowing me.

It's reeeally annoying it happened to me and a mate in Tesco a few fridays ago. It's a bit silly really because they are the ones loosing out because we just went to Thresher's instead.

Yeah i guess, but the cashier isn't really gonna care if they lose a few quid, they'll be more bothered about getting in trouble for serving an underage person.

Yeah it all still mystifies me though as to when the person standing next to the customer counts as the one you're serving, absolutely nothing that I can see in the guidelines about this.

To me it should be clear policy: Either

    1. it doesn't matter if the person handing over the cash has ID, EVERY individual there under 21 should be asked for ID and if there are parties under 18 then the customer should be refused service, or

    2. The focus should just be on the person you're actually serving unless you have VERY good reason to believe they're intending to supply it to someone else (and this doesn't include just having someone else standing next to them).

There is no indication on the Think 21 signs that the former is the policy and I've never heard that in order to be served alcohol everyone present has to be 18 and you therefore can't buy alcohol if, for example, you have your child with you. Would be the same as saying adults in pubs that allow under 18s aren't allowed to buy themselves any alcohol at all.

Totally. I lost my last passport by taking it out on the piss with me, now if they wont accept a combination of student ID and provisional license (although Edinburgh isnt too bad for that) I'm screwed.

In regard to the provisional drivers licence comment... my misses asked a bouncer about that once...

Its apparently because if you sent of for your provisional when your 17 and put a date on the form that actually says your 18 they don't bother following it up and verifying your exact age.

When you apply for your full pink licence they do full checks and therefore would know your exact age.

Here the individual cashier has to pay quite a hefty fine if they are caught selling alcohol or cigarettes to minors. I believe its $500 for the first offence and it increases after. I get carded all the time, even though I know the cashier at the liquor store by name! I couldn't afford to take that risk, I'd ID grandma.

i work at morrisons and right from day one we are BRAIN WASHED with task 21 i.e you have to id anyone who looks under 21. well i say bollocks to that because its fucking embarrassing. i never ID people who are blatently older than 18..and i can tell seeing as i am 18. having said that, i have apparently served some 16 year old wankers some carling before though that was the last i heard of it.

at the end of the day, we are told that we stand to be fined if caught out but we will only get £80 if we do. i say only but thats quite small when you compare it to £8000 which is what the supermarket stand to lose. that is why they want people to id you so much. and another thing which fucks me off is that every friday night you get some lads in wanting to buy booze, and my supervisor stands there goin - u better id them. and when i do they turn around and hand me an id saying theyre 25 so who looks like the dick then....

AND when i get fake ids i refuse the sale (i used to have one myself so i know what they look like) and then good ol supervisor comes over and goes, oh yeah thats fine! stupid idiot what is the point in accepting an id which is fake when you will get into more trouble for that than selling someone underage!!!

    sorry im calm now :)

Bet you love the uniform .. i certainly did ...

id crack up if i was refused service of alcohol and had id on me .. unless it was blatently obvious i was buying for other (ie buying 10 bottles of white lightening or something)

On fake IDs... the best one ever.

I walked into the village co-op. I bought a cake, a packet of candles, and a box of matches. She asked for ID (I was wearing my leathers, lol) as matches are an age restricted product. Fair enough. Hand over driving licence. She rings the bell. Apparently, there's been a spate of fake IDs recently. So I stand there patiently and smile sweetly, a bit shocked (she was being polite at least), her manager comes over and checks it... for about 1 minute! (which is quite long if you think about it)

Then it was all ok. When I used to work in a shop, maybe I'm 'bad' but I used to generally use my discretion. If two 20ish olds were buying loads of groceries and a bottle of wine - no biggy. If someone who I thought was about the same age was getting 6 bottles of lambrini then see if they've got ID. It's a thing called common sense.

Thank you very much. As it happens, it was just my way of getting revenge on someone that had given me some abuse a few days earlier.
