University snobbery

I was wondering if it was only me but have you come across or know any university snobs. I went to Durham and it was full of snobs thinking that Durham was a better university than nearly all the rest (apart from Oxbridge obviously). It makes me both sad and angry that people still judge people by what uni they go to.

yeh there's a hell of a lot of unu snobs about, I was probably among them when choosing my unis to go on my UCAS form, I only wanted well established ones with a good reputation (ie not an ex-poly). But now I am leaving a "good" uni and applying for an ex-poly so it's up to the individual.

If you were a genius, it would make no difference where you went, and for the majority (ie not Oxbridge), unless you are going for a job with a major graduate recruiter, it makes little difference what uni you go to.

Yeah the biggest uni snob I know is my mum

She hates the fact that polys are called unis and is very dismissive of them and, i suspect, the people that go to them

I think everyone thinks their own univeristy is the best because they are too proud to admit the uni's failings.

There are a number of ex-polys that are held in reverence. A noteable one being Plymouth University.

It's now regarded as the centre of excellence for a number of subjects including many sciences, and social sciences research.

Another is UCN.

But these repuatations are always relative to what the poly was like, so whilst great improvements have undoubtedly been made, I don't think Nene competes with the likes of Oxbridge just yet.

New Unis can concentrate or specialise on more "new" subjects, whereas oxbridge concentrates on more traditional subjects.

You shouldn't loook at whole uni's but at departments.

Durhams only like that if you go to Hatfield College. People should be proud of what uni they go to, and becauyse of that people tend to not see/admit the bad sides of their uni. And I know my gfs mum is a uni snob, she lieks me being a Durham student and all that

But, yeah, Durhams the third-best in teh country. Its not our fault its the truth

Is it just me but i find the worst snobs are the ones who went to normal schools like comps......its like they've got something to prove.
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
That's a stupid thing to say. You could call me a uni snob (or at least I used to be) and I went to a grammar school.
• Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I'm not saying all snobs went to comprehensives i'm saying the worst ones out there did...there's a difference. This is what i have found in my experience...its like they have something to prove all the time.

Well maybe if you went to a crap school you would feel chuffed with yourself to have done well and got into a good uni...

There's a fine line between being proud of your achievements and lauding it over people thinking it makes you better than them.

From my understandin UCLAN is an ex-poly!
Coming from a working class family, my 'rents are proud of me for just been accepted into a uni! At least I know that I'll be with ppl who want to be there! (well at least I hope they will be) I'm hoping that they'll probably be like me!

I am studying Phyisics at Bristol (VERY snobbish).

In my opinion you get two kinds of people at unis like mine. Nice ordinary people who are great to know, and snobs who look at you like dirt. Sometimes I only have to open my mouth and let my cockney accent out and they switch off. They deny it of course, but they all do it.

As for Unis themselves being snobbish, I have a thoery.

I think the top unis like Bristol, Imperial etc ARE exclusive to the smartest people. but Oxbridge has a SUPERIORITY COMPLEX. That's the difference.

Erm, you're wrong. I go to Durham too (we should start a club!) and Im in Hatfield, yes, it is full of pretentious little girls who cry because daddy won't buy them a new rugby ball. Anyway, it is also full of some quite nice people, from comprehensive school backgrounds and some poor people (like me, lol) but I agree, they're in the minority.

Durham is average university living on a good reputation. I think it's full of 'snobs' no matter which college you're at. I don't think it is the third best in the country and if I could afford to, I would move to Newcastle uni.

PS. What doesn't help is being a 'local student'...we're totally looked down on by most of the other students, well thats what I've found.

This is gonna get shot down, but I beleive it is a greater acheivment for someone from an underprivlaged area or a low success comp to get into a good uni and good on 'em for shouting out loud about it.

It made me laugh when I found out that Plymouth now offers a surfing degree ... mmm good university eh?

I live round here and trust me the Uni's not exactly famous for attracting brainiacs!

(No offence meant to Plymouth uni students.. honest!)
