How to/did you choose your uni

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Yes my questions are for a project, yes I will pm a mod to ask permission but could you take a squizz and answer in the meantime anway?

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?

What did you want to know about the town and student life?

What promotional material did you look at?

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)

I am making a multimedia marketing promo piece for my course that incorporates info about the uni as well as the department and course. I will be including pictures, audio, video, animation and the whole thing has to be interactive and deliverable as a CD-ROM, POI display within the department, and availalble online.

I have made a film about the uni facilities showing the food hall, SU, fitness stuff, Digital Department, and just a wonder around. I know I missed off a few things- library, halls, blah blah whoops but I er, mostly only use trhe gym at uni so went with my own interests by showing all the sports facilities LMFAO. Anyway, tomorrow I am filming and recording some student and lecturer interviews, it would be helpfull to know what you would like/would have liked to have see/n on a video and as audio about your uni befor eyou go/went there.

ta very muchly

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?
I think I wanted to know exactly what was covered and what options were available to me in the way of modules I could choose.

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?
Just what the course covered each year really. My mum left it all up to me.

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?
Whether there were any. Umm...gym, shops, library.

What did you want to know about the town and student life?
If the town had a bad reputation and what kinda life style I was going to lead as a student.

What promotional material did you look at?
Prospectus and PDFs about the course on the uni website

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)
Student testemonials from people doing my course. Also a video tour of the campus would be a really good idea.

It probably won't have much reference but...

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?
Did they have it. (but no uni in the world probably wouldn't so ti didn't much matter)

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?
nothing. Just wanted to get a degree, didn't think about any opportunities the school would offer at the time.

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?
Nothing really. WOuldn't be using any so didn't look into it.

What did you want to know about the town and student life?
Nothing again. I knew about the town, lived close. Wasn't interested one bit in student life. Just wanted the education. All I cared about was that they would have enough night classes available to complete the degree. And since according to the man, who graduated from there, the school has alot of working adult students and night/online/independent study classes were plentiful.

What promotional material did you look at?
NOne, should really have looked at the cost before though :\

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)
More classes at the satelite campus. Not just required ones but the interesting ones they have at the main campus.

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?

Was it accredited by the relevant professional institutions, was there an option of a sandwich year, how did they feel about applicants taking gap years, what were the entry requirements, what proportion of the students didn't take further maths.

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?

What fields did students go into after they graduated, average salary, employment statistics. Parents pretty much left me to it.

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?

Access to a swimming pool, library facilities to keep book costs down, beyond that I was more interested in department facilities, workshops, labs etc

What did you want to know about the town and student life?

Cost of living, was there a town or was it an arse end campus (like Warwick), where people lived.

What promotional material did you look at?

    Paper prospectus and website

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)

Department/course summary sheets with all the essential info, entry requirements, accreditation, rent costs, living costs, nearest town, facilities. Quick summary of everything you could need to know about that couurse/uni on one sheet.

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?
Firstly, how many contact hours were required as I was commuting, what level the tutors were qualified to teach at, where the alumni have gained work since completing the course etc.

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?
We wanted to know what sort of contacts the uni had with the industry I was going into, and the type of work experience I could expect.

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?
As a disabled student I needed to make sure lifts/access wasn't a problem, that there were enough facilities for all students (there were not)....

What did you want to know about the town and student life?
Wasn't applicable as I was commuting, although information for commuters would've been extremely helpful.

What promotional material did you look at?
    Powerpoint slideshow... borrrring.

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)
Examples of past student's work/portfolios as this would've meant the difference between applying and actually accepting a place on the course.

Cheers my dears. One thing I'm having trouble with is positivie stuff (the only trouble with the negative is the amount of stuff to edit out!) What are/were teh fantabulous things about your uni that would have made your choice to go there even easier. I can't think of a single thing (I would have said the student welfare carer person as she was ace and got me off the streets, a job, back into uni etc- but they cut her position so it no longer exists) and am only at my uni as it's the most reasonable one for commuting.

i dont know if you still want stuff but heres me:

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)? What future jobs i could get from them. I also wanted to know which courses to take to get into the industry that interests me.

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know? My parents mainly wanted to know the price and to know that i was taking the right courses, they were also concerned that i would take courses that 'everybody' takes and end up in an industry with too many graduates and not enough jobs.
I wanted to know which courses to take to get into the right uni.

What did you want to know about the uni facilities? i didn't know very much, before starting uni we were mainly taught about the social aspects of the uni, such as the bar on campus and the sports hall and gym

What did you want to know about the town and student life? i wish we had been told more about orientation week (i dont know if you have that whre you are) there are loads of activities, many to get first years mingling, but they forget that as first years many of us dont have connections and miss out on activities.

What promotional material did you look at? i looked at the brochures that were offered and went to a presentation on it

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video) idealy a video of what a lecture would have been like would have been great and probably changed my courses, i would also like to know what im geting myself into for 2nd year.

good things that made me choose my uni/positive things about uni:
-it was really just the look of the university, it has amazing old buildings.
-i was very excited about mingling with other students and meeting new friends, which is something that they said was possible.
-there is a possibility of students paying x amount and getting the internet for the whole year, this idea is a great idea which excites me.
-finally, we have cheaper health care and health care on site, although i havent used it yet, it would be very handy (im not sure if all unis have this)
-also, there is a gym with cheaper fares than other gyms (again not sure if this is all unis)

    Bump bump bumpity bump

Yo, Thanks again for your input. Any more for any more? I am working on this project right now for a deadline on Friday - yeah I know, I leave things to the last minute. I am using four intro questions on my 'splash' page, the first three are:
What interests are covered on this course?
Why is Univeristy of Not Telling a great place to study (my subject here)?
Who is the course aimed at?

I need one last question, although question three will be re-worded. The answers for question three are:
Great pace for college leavers/Gap year with broad base covered in the first year and opportunity to specialise in second and third year. Part time pathways for mature students & those who'd love to earn while they earn. Completing the first year qualifies you for a recognised qualifiation (Certificate of Higher Education) where three years full time successfully awards you a BA(Hons) & the opportunity for further studies - Masters in (my subject here) are avilable at (my university here).

So, any help rewording the third question and coming up with the fourth before the end of tonight (about 5am) GREATLY appreciated.

    Mwah

What questions did you want to know about the course(s)?

    - To be frank it was just important that they let me on, I didn’t know that much about the course other than the title – ‘business’ leaves little to the imagination.

What did you want to know about the future prospects, and if applicable, what did your 'rents want to know?

    - That it allowed me to go into the 3rd year of a degree was enough for me (it was an HND course)

What did you want to know about the uni facilities?

    - Very little

What did you want to know about the town and student life?

    - I knew it was in London, which was enough for me

What promotional material did you look at?

    - I read through the prospectus which seemed to have all the usual stuff

What would you have wanted to see that wasn't offered? (eg, a video)

    - A video might have been useful, though personal comments from current students would be the most useful, but for them to be properly useful they would have to tell you the bad bits as well and I doubt the uni would allow that.
