I'd like to see more of the UK and quite like short weekend breaks - but with the state of the roads, go slows on motorways, etc I'd like to leave the car behind and try going by train .. might even look into organising a group trip as you can get discounts ..

So any suggestions of places to visit by train .. where the train takes you into the heart of a city that's easy to cover by foot?

Idea is to leave on a Friday night from London about 7pm and go out to a bar / club and then maybe on the Saturday site-seeing in the day - clubbing at night - Sunday maybe a nice lunch somewhere before coming back to London.

I know places like Cardiff / Birmingham tend to have all the mains bars and club in one area which makes things easier to get to by foot.

You can get to York by train from London, and Leeds. The stations are in the city centre in both cases.

You could cover most of the country in 2 hours. Leeds, York, Liverpool. Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich!

just noticed virgin trains have reduced their saver tickets to 7 days notice down from 4 weeks so never know - 2 hours from London..

Dunno if any of these locations is good though - prefer hostels - more sociable then hotels

The Northern Quarter is full of bars that young professionals and some students go to. It's right next to Piccadilly train station or Victoria... it's right next to the shops. It's not far from any other restaurants/bars/clubs you might want to go to. Its purrrrfect!
