Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
if Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe attends.

Full Story

About fucking time!

This guy has led Zimbabwe to ruin and yet countries around the world still welcome him with open arms.

Once one of the most successful countries in Africa is a basket case now, thanks to Robert Mugabe.

Nice to see Gordon Brown have some principles.

An unprincipled twit from the European Commission was on TV saying it would be wrong for Brown to break with the other European countries on this issue.

I imagine it will make absolutely no difference to Mugabe and his goons, but it's still important to send out the right signals. Kind of like David Cameron saying he's going to give married couples twenty quid a month or whatever.

Three cheers for the dour Scot :grump:

Mugabe is a cunt, didn't they give Zimbabwe some top job in the UN lately too?

What is this, primary school for underachievers? Get him out the fuck!

Well James Gordon Brown might be sending a message BUT it's not really very grown up behaviour to say if someone comes they won't go ..

He could be missing out on a great chance to strike deals with the many other nations in Africa whilst other European countries that do attend take up those opportunities.

So if the reincarnations of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were going to be in attendance you'd have no problems with him socialising with them either? Yes i am being extreme but the point is still valid. I'm glad that he's taken that stance, people are always going on about policticians having no backbone/doing nothing, so i'm happy someone is finally taking a stance on matters, no matter how large or small.

Mr Brown was accused of double standards by the Portuguese MEP Paolo Casaca, who questioned why Britain was prepared to attend a summit in March between the EU and Asean, the Asian forum, which included a delegation from Burma, whose high officials are also banned from the EU because of human rights abuses.

This is NOT a social event

This is NOT a UK and zimbabwe ONLY event

Africa and it's problems are a lot more important then whether of not one man attends or not - have you spent much time in Africa? Have you had to wait until after midnight when people have gone to sleep to turn on the taps because there's not enough water pressure during the day because of poor infrastructure? Or seen people begging on the streets who don't even have hands?

I have ... I still have relatives living there.

No one is telling Brown to go shake his hand or even talk to him but to ignore all the other countries in Africa by not going at all is selfish.

By the same reasoning you've just made about Hitler, etc leaders from other countries could say they won't attend meetings where the USA or UK are present - as they object to their role in Iraq and the parts they've played in people dying there - which some estimate include over 600,000 deaths and and estimated 2 million people losing their homes.

If Brown has any backbone why isn't he sending in the troops to zimbabwe?

What exactly is he doing that's showing backbone - threatening to NOT do something ..

Africa and it's problems are, to a great extent, the result of the actions of tyrants like Mugabe. And what makes it worse, is this irritating 'we have to stick together no matter what' attitude that the other African leaders seem to have. Why do they refuse to denounce him for his heinous actions? Why are they willing to even go to a summit with this odious man? What does that say about them? Brown would be happy to meet with the rest of them, but they're not happy to meet the EU without Mugabe. And they're not sticking together for the benefit of the Zimbabwean people, it's for their leader. They'd rather have all their people suffer, than denounce him, because that would leave their own actions open to criticism in the future. They're the selfish ones.

Good on him, I don't blame him.
