Loneliness & madness

I watched the film 'Notes on a scandal' today, for those of you that have seen it this will make more sense, but do you think that being extremely lonely can bring on a kind of madness? perhaps like psychosis or something... it just got me thinking is all...

I suppose so, like the guy in "Cast away". He had to invent a fake person so that he wouldn't be alone, and that person felt so real to him that he risked his life before the end to save him.
Of course if you're not on an empty island it's a different kind of being alone, but it could still have similar effects I think.

I haven't seen notes on a scandal... But my opinion would be that if your mental health is 100% then you wouldn't get extremly lonely. So maybe it would be a 'what came first' kind of situation. But then everyone is different, so I don't really know.
