A friend has done it twice, with the first family the wife was a nutcase, expected far too much of her, treated her a lot like a slave and it was rare if she fed her properly. She did all the cooking, cleaning, shopping, washing and ironing as well as looking after the kids.

Second family she was with she had a great time, was very much part of the family, and a a role more like that of a much older sister as an au pair should have.

It's hard work, you don't get much privacy or time away from the family you are with which doesn't suit some people.
