Friend might have cancer

My friends finger started swelling up months ago... He went to the doctor who gave him injections of some kind (think might have been steroid). Anyways... The injections didn't help and it's gradually got bigger and more painful so that he can hardly use his hands.

Finally a couple of weeks ago he was sent to hospital to have it looked at... They took xrays, desided they thought it was a tumour; and then he was referred to a different hospital and had an appointment there last week. He didn't realise until afterwards that he'd seen one of the top cancer specialists in the country (he can be a little dipsey sometimes).

Anyway, aparently the specialist said it was likely to be an infection of some sort but could be cancer and he was due to have a biopsy today...
I texted him yesterday to say good luck etc... and I got a message back this lunchtime from him saying they took him in on Monday in the end, he's still in hospital and they're gunna cut his finger open tomorrow.

Now I'm really puzzeled (and worried). I asked if they'd done the biopsy on monday and I'm really confused cos he said 'no, they're just gunna test the stuff they cut out'
I don't know if he's a bit out of it and they've done the biopsy and then decided to operate straight away, or if they've put it off and not going to do a biopsy and just going to operate to take it out... I think it's probably the second one... But why keep him in hospital from Monday until tomorrow if they're not operating until tomorrow???
I can't talk to him now so I'll be in the dark until it's all over. But I'm worried and wondered if anyone has any ideas what could be going on? (Probably not, but I'm just worried and need to talk about it :( )

No, he was referred to Birmingham and I can't get down there.

I could try ringing his mum up at his house I supose.

They keep people in for all sorts of reasons inbetween deciding to operate and operating.

It could be because they are worried about the infection and want to monitor it and IV drug him between now and the operation, it could be because it's the only way to keep him on the theatre list (sounds daft but has happened). Hard as it seems you worrying about what is possible going isn't going to help you or him. It could be cancer, it might not, but either way it sounds like he'd getting pretty good treatment.

All you can do is hope for the best and be nice to him. Look after yourself and him.

    xx

Isn't cutting a bit out and testing it a biopsy though?

Hope your friend (and you) are ok.

Thanks for all the replies. Hopefully it won't be cancer anyway.

Yeah... I think he meant they're gunna take it ALL out and test it from that, rather than taking a bit, looking at it and then taking the rest of it out... If that makes sense.

can i just say... that is so typical of so many GPs... their delay in treatment usually only causes further complications.

    hope your friend is okay.

Yeah. If it does turn out to be cancer I'm going to be well pissed off... They didn't even send him for an xray or anything... I think that's pretty bad.

I find that slightly odd. However, a similar thing happened to me earlier this year and it took 2 appointments before they did some sort of test on me to find out what was wrong.
