Killer Trees

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
How many people do you know of, either directly or indirectly - known either yourself or via friend or friends of friends have been killed by a Tree?

I'd say I know of at least 4 people:

2 people that were killed (separately) crashing their cars into a tree
1 clipped his microlight on a tree and killed himself
1 was killed by a falling coconut that hit him on his head

Seriously though, yes I knew someone who was killed by a tree. He was in my year at school and a tree branch fell on him and he died :(

There was a story when I was a kid about another kid who lived pretty near me who ate some seeds and a tree grew inside him and he died.

When I was at school someone's dad was in a car that was crushed by a tree. I'd forgotten 'til now. How depressing...

I once knew somebody who ate an apple from a tree. 59 years later she died from heart failure.

Is it really that common? My street has those small trees growing all along the pavement in their own little enclosure type things but I'll have to watch one doesn't fall on me

It's probably about as common as the number of people who have had their leg broken by a swan ...

They're mini tree prisons. Maybe they're bad trees. Killer ones.

My entire class had their legs broken by swans on a school trip to a country park once.

When I was about 10, I was bitten by a swan on my thigh and I had a really massive, tender bruise for ages. It was sore.

    True story

In tropical rainforests the #1 cause of death isn't some kind of big cat or some poisonous frog or even the natives, it's actually falling tree branches. If you ever do a thing where you stay out they'll teach you it's one of the important bits of making a tent.

What does that mean? What's a microlight, how do you clip one on a tree and how does that kill you?

A microlight is like a very miniture plane. Think of a handglider with a very small engine on that sounds like a moped.

For a tragic topic, this thread has given me more laughs than most recently!

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd describe someone who had driven into a tree as being killed by a tree, I'd be more likely to say they'd died in a car accident. When you put it that way, I just have images of trees leaping out in front of cars...

And no, I've never known anyone killed by a tree. I haven't really known that many people who have died though, really, so I guess the odds are slim :chin:

A friend of a friend died when he crashed into a fence post and it went through his chest. It's wood so nearly like a tree :chin:
